Idle issue
Idle issue
Hi guys! I'm back. I've having an issue with my 2004 Acura TL. I brought it to the mechanic yesterday because I feel my car shaking at stop sings and stop lights. Mounts are new; they were changed back in September. I advised him that car shakes A LOT in the morning when I first start it; really hard start and rough idle, after the idle drops to normal operating temp., it stops the shaking. However, the idle on my car while I stop fluctuates up and down causing the car to shake. I think my idle is off and may need to be adjusted/reset. Can anyone give me some feedback or help on this issue? Perhaps I can do it myself?
Thanks!!
Thanks!!
It could be a lot of things:
- loose spark plug (easy to check)
- dirt in EGR valve causing the valve not to close (easy to check)
- dirty/ bad fuel injector (less likely)
- valves substantially out of adjustment (less likely)
How many miles on the car?
Any codes?

EGR and fuel injectors. I clean mine every 30K or so with a can of Sea Foam automatic transmission treatment added to the fuel. Always a noticeable improvement in idle smoothness.
I rarely get on the gas with my car nor do I routinely go above 3K rpms.

Perform an idle relearn procedure. Involves unplugging the battery for a bit and reconnecting it; afterwards, start the car and let it idle till its up to operating temperature (rad fans turn on twice). Make sure all electricals (radio, AC, seat warmers, lights, etc.) are turned off while performing this.

The mechanic said the car is fine; basically it's old is what he told me. The car had 96,500 miles on it. Not a lot actually, considering it's an 04. I performed a fuel injector service at pep boys which helped a lot with the hesitation, however after a few weeks the hesitation came back. I'm not sure if maybe I should perform an engine flush? Maybe that would take care of the shaking and hesitation? My mechanic also told me that my I need to have my timing belt/water pump changed. I was also told that I should have my valves adjusted; maybe that would help the issue? Thanks for the feedback everyone!!
His method was literally the easiest thing to do, wouldn't you rather try this than clean a bunch of stuff. 9/10 resetting ecu improves shifting and idle
headers but I live in the cities so rarely an opportunity to romp on it. on my trip to MI I did nail it every time left a toll booth in IL on I90. I am at 134K and that seafoam is great...
