I have had it with this car

I have given up on fixing my rattles. There are several that I have tried to fix but to no avail. They are like roaches...they keep coming back and multiplying. But ok...I can live with that thanks to cranking my radio up to 30.

However, recently within the past few days I have gotten some weird vibrations as I slowly accelerate from a stop through 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears. The car shudders at the low RPM range. I have owned several manual cars and I have never seen this before. In fact, all of my manual cars have been outstanding.

I have no idea what this could possibly be either. It cannot possibly be the clutch as I only have 16k miles and clutches should last to 70-100k plus miles depending on driver and environment. So that leads me to a possible problem with the LSD. I have noticed that my car seems to wander, when trying to go straight. Who knows...I can say that I have had it though and will be vigorously shopping for a new car this weekend. A perfect excuse to snatch up either a VW TDI, or Toyota Hybrid before the coming oil crisis. Another area where this car is weak is in gas mileage too. No matter how much I feather the throttle and finesse it...its always 18 mpg...that is just crap. The only time I have ever gotten decent mileage is on long ass trips.

Sorry to hear that. That gas mileage seems a bit low as well. I like the Prius and it really does get over 50mpg.

I get about 23 to 25 on average. I also had a slight simmy at about 60 mph. it wasn't wasn't the tires as I had them changed several times at the dealer. when I changed the rims the problem went away.

I must agree, the gas mileage city/hwy is poor and its true, the only time you get decent gas mileage is on long trips.

I can never understand people saying they get poor gas mileage with the TL. Either you are driving like idiots or there is something wrong with your car. I never get below 20 mpg and it's usually around 21-22 mpg and on some highway trips I have gotten 27-28 mpg...and I drive fairly spirited.

Republican....of course I know what that means. So if you claim to be not driving like a madman....then I can only assume that something on the car you have needs tweeking because your gas mileage figure is WAY in the minority for a TL.

I drive pretty hard in my 5AT and generally average about 25 MPG in my 75 mile roundtrip commute. On long freeway drives, I get over 30 MPG easily with the cruise control set around 5-7 over the limit.

This reminds me of a thread in the electronics forum where someone complained he had to turn up his radio "all the way" just to be able to hear it and so, therefore, it was too weak of a system. I mentioned that my system was capable of over 110 dB at a setting of 20 and I was then torn apart by the other thread participants for suggesting something may be wrong with his system.

Republican: It seems you should get your service tech to look at your engine to see why, even with gentle driving, your mileage is so low. With the current gas prices, whatever fix he can do will probably pay for itself quickly.

I noticed you live in the NYC area, Republican TL. A lot of members from there note very low mileage--do you live in an area where you have to stop every block? That could explain your low mileage. Even so, I'd take it to the dealer to see whether there's an issue with the engine. It can't be the number of miles on the car--low odometer TLs seem to have lower mileage but usually improve by where you are at 16k.

I am consistently in the 23-25 mpg range with 60/40 highway/city driving and am reasonably please wih that mileage.

HTH a little.

I have brought the car to the techs for this among the many other issues. I broke the car in according to the manual, like all my other cars. They tell me everything is fine. I warm up the engine in the morning to operating temps. I do everything right. ExxonMobil 93 fuel since day one. I even tried Hess, BP/Shell gas that is near me to see if I could eke out better city mileage, but that never worked either.

I just can't get past 18/19 mpg, and its not even around town driving. Its 40/60 hwy/city. I do get 28-30mpg on my trips to AC, but I used to get that on my Camaro SS and my Audi A4. Its disappointing that my 345HP V8 Camaro got better everyday gas mileage than my Acura TL. I guess this car was jinxed straight from the start.

Let's see here....you say you get 28-30 MPG on the highway and drive 40% highway and 60% city and that overall you can't get past 18 MPG. Let's examine this:

20 gallons at 18 MPG (your claim) would get you 360 miles.
40% highway would be using 8 gallons.
60% city would be using 12 gallons.

28 MPG on 8 gallons would take you 224 miles which would leave 136 miles for the remaining 12 gallons to bring you to the 360 mile point for 20 gallons and a 20 gallon total of 18 MPG, which you claim you can't get past. That would mean that you only traveled 136 city miles for that 12 gallons of city driving, a total of 11.3 MPG for city driving.

I'm not buying it.

My former car was a 5MT Mazda 626 with the V6 engine. My commute used to be just over two miles on city streets. During that time, I tended to average about 12-14 MPG. Once my commute changed to be a 37-mile blend of city and highway, the mileage crept up to about 23 MPG on average. So, I could see his city mileage being really crappy, if he's going on short drives with dense traffic and lots of signals, but it's still something worth investigating further.

Republican: Can you get a loaner TL and see if it gets the same mileage as yours on your routes?

bluenoise.....that's kind of what I am saying. I think he must be driving short trips and is stuck in traffic A LOT more than he is letting on. Even then 11.3 MPG seems nearly impossible.

Maybe he's forgetting to turn his car off when he goes into his house....lol.

Hey Adamo do you even read the posts and who I am answering? What is your IQ? 75?

A trip to AC (Atlantic City) round trip is a little over 300 miles, and I get 28-30 mpg. THAT IS NOT MY EVERYDAY COMMUTE DUMB ASS!!

My normal driving is 35-40% City/town and the rest highway at 65mph (35 miles round trip). That should get me in the low 20s and it does not. This is with BABYING THE THROTTLE!

Get it through your dense skull......I can drive like a grandma and I still get bad mileage. I conducted the test for a month and thats the way it is. Sorry you have to believe what the Acura MPG states on your window sticker applies to all cars

My Camaro used to get 22 MPG on the same commute. My Audi (non-Quattro V6) used to get 23. Acura TL 18/19 mpg.

Please...Take a deep breath....

We're only pointing out that your TL seems quite different from others' and that there may be something wrong with it. Your mileage is well below average for 3G TL owners, it seems. You can keep saying it's a piece of sh!t and do nothing about it but complain, or you can find a good tech willing to do a little work to help you get it up to spec.

Republican: When your MID shows only 18/19 MPG, what does it show as your average MPH?

I'm in the same boat as Republican. I do a combination of highway and city driving everyday and I have yet to average over 18 mpg.

Let's face it, this car is a gas guzzler, a rattle magnet and it suffers from vibrations through the gas pedal. Definitely not what I envisioned when I bought this car.

That really sucks, although my TL has been a rattle magnet since mile 500, the mileage is reasonable 50/50 city/hwy averages at 26 and long highway trips around 33. After a full year of ownership, I have to admit that I'm looking forward to my next car and it will not be a HONDA/ACURA model. I've taken my TL to dealership and tried to fix these rattles, but as soon as one gets fixed another pops up. I'm extremely frustrated with this car and some of the board members who get very defensive when someone points out TL's quality issues. Some of us were not us lucky landing a "perfect" car

I wonder why no one with low MPG numbers will post their average MPH number, too. I'm guessing those numbers would be similarly low, in which case it's not the car's fault. It's just the wrong car to expect better numbers in those situations (low average speed). I wouldn't say that makes it a "gas guzzler," though.

Regarding rattles: I was successful in getting mine fixed, but it involved replacing some of the parts with newer ones. I know the roof liner had a slight design change so I'm wondering if the newer TLs have less rattles than the old ones because of slight improvements in the design. If that's the case, it might be worth demanding updated parts from the dealer when fixing the rattles.

I have the same problems you been having. I have too many rattles. I think this is the fourth time I have taken it in. Also I agree with the car wandering off, instead of going straight. Also my gear don't shift right. I can feel the gear shift at very unusal place. I will be going 40 mph coming up towards a red light, and take my feet off the peddle to reduce speed, and all the sudden the gear shift. Giving a little push. I am having a lot of problem with my TL and I am getting tired of it too.

If you drove in a place like NYC daily, especially Manhattan, you'd come to understand VERY quickly.

Are you saying your avg. MPG in town is 16-18 when the avg. MPH shows 30-50?

20 mpg and I think (without looking) 20 mph.

And I started getting a rattle in the left air vent since A/C season started. I kept it closed (and quiet) during the winter. I've also got another one on the right side, I think something to do with the right side visor, but I haven't tracked it down yet.

Wink rattles and low mileage? NO WAY!

i picked up my 06 with 6000 dealer demonstrater miles on it. there are no rattles thankfully. i just returned from a long rode trip that took me up to moderately high elevation (about 4000feet). i set the cruise control at about 78 (I-5 limit is 70). several times when i hit winding uphill curves in the mountains, i floored it and hit over 90....(wheehhhhhhheww!) computer showed average MPG for this trip and earlier city driving at 27mpg. i'm happy with that. driving around town with a few short freeway trips at 65-70 has shown MPG to be 21. i have got on it several times checking out what kind of power this baby has in comparison to the 03 i traded in. only had the car for 2 weeks and i am in love with it. and trust me, as soon as i get the chance on to hit some deserted roads out in the country, i will check out the average MPG when you travel at 100+....
