Howl or whirring sound between 35-50 mph

I have an ’06 TL, 115k miles, its in great shape except it makes a whirring/howling sound when my foot is on the gas, and I’m traveling between 35-50 mph (it might be there at highway speeds but just being drowned out by tire noise). The tie-rods seem fine. I’ve been told it could be the bearings, but wouldn’t the sound still be there whether my foot was on the gas or not, if it were the bearings? This is the part I find strangest, if I’m traveling in that speed range (radio off), its quite noticeable when my foot is on the gas, but if I suddenly take my foot off, its quiet as can be. It seems the sound comes from the front wheels (front passenger side?), but I don't know for sure. It doesn't matter what gear the car is in either.

Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks all!!

Sounds like the transmission to me. It stops when your foot is off the gas?

^^^transmission is locate on the driver side not passenger, OP it is hard for us to know exactly what sound are you talking about, if you can post a video then it would be a big help.

I'm interested in what might be the cause as I'm in the same boat. When I'm around 40-50 mph and pushing the gas, I hear an annoying sound as well. And just like the OP, it only happens when pushing the gas. I'll try posting a video when I get the chance to see if it is the same noise.

I have the same noise once in a while. I think it may be the heat shield. There have been some other threads on this topic.

From my experience, a bad bearing would be a constant noise, based primarily off the speed of the wheel. Transmission would be my guess. Next question, is it an manual trans? If so, I had the same thing on a previous car.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions thus far. My car has an automatic transmission. (I'll try to upload a video tomorrow, can't seem to load anything greater than 2MB here!?)

I take very good care of my car, had the tranny fluid changed at 85k, belts (including timing) changed @ 105k together with the water pump. I'm at a loss why its doing this, I just hope it isn't the transmission!! yikes!

i'm sorry, cupped tires?! changing sound at steady speed depending on the degree to which the gas pedal is depressed?

i may be way off, but, honestly ... what's the connection here???

I have the same problem I think. Mine is almost like a whistling/whine that can be heard at 40+mph and easily on the highways. I've got a deadened/sealed car with Conti. DWS tires so it's pretty quiet. Anyways, it goes away IMMEDIATELY when letting off the gas and will come back IMMEDIATELY when back on the gas.

Kicker is I had the transmission rebuilt less than a year ago and I still think they F'd up. It shifts hard at times just like it did before it went bad. I wish we could figure out what this is.

I've got cracks in my dash so I thought it might be whistling from the wind or something coming up through those, but who knows.

LOL
and the wind only blows when the pedal is depressed ...
it's "drive-by-wire", not a "drive-by-air"
