How to check for a bad front motor mount...

I had a chatter coming from the front end that turned out to be the side motor mount. I went the the stealership and they said both side and front mounts were bad via " lets rev the engine and watch the motor rise up and down". So, I bought both mounts on their recommendation. I decided to replace the side one first because that was my initial problem, the chattering noise. So, the chatter is gone but before I replace the front mount I did the old "rev the engine" and I don't have the problem with the engine rising up and down... Or maybe it's just not as pronounced as before. Before I tear it down and pull the front mount, what am I really looking for? There is no fluid coming out of the mount, a few wrinkles in the rubber but nothing yelling "replace me" like the side mount. Is there another test I can do for the front mount? How did you decide to replace the front mount? By not replacing the front, I would save $220 in parts.

Well, I rolled the dice and decided to swap it out and sure enough, it was torn... a few hours later and all is back together.
