Hood No Longer Stays Up

After 7¾ years and 121,000 miles, my hood no longer stays up for more than a minute or so before it drops, like it did on my head last week.

Any one have experience with aftermarket hood stays? I've seen aftermarket replacements on rockauto.com for about $15 a piece. It seems one part# fits both sides while the OEM's for about $40 and 47 each respectively have different ones for each side.

Yea same thing happened to me. I replaced the two hood struts about half a year ago becuase the hood would not stay up at all. I believe I got new ones from oemacuraparts.com for pretty cheap, and installation was very easy and quick.

https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-tl-1999-2003-98/acura-tl-hood-strut-how-install-632582/ might help

From Rockauto.com:

SACHS Part # SG326009
Hood Lift; Hood $14.06

STRONGARM Part # 6351
Hood Lift; Front (Only 14 Remaining) $15.24

RHINOPAC/WORLD CAR Part # 6351
Hood Lift; Hood Lift $15.82

Is any one brand better than the others, or are they all pretty much the same?

I just went with OEM. If they can last 7 years, it really shouldn't matter what brand you go with.

I just replaced both of mine. Any brand should work just fine. The hood stayed up fine with just 1 but I went ahead and installed the other since I already bought it.

The OEM struts are the Sachs Stabilus struts with a Honda/Acura part number @ $50 each with a limited-time warranty.
The aftermarket Sachs Stabilus struts have a lifetime warranty; the other brands have a couple of years warranty only, IIRC.

I bought the Sachs struts from Autozone and installed them both in less than 5 minutes; they fit perfectly.

Seems like the hood lifts are starting to fail on the early 3G TL's at this point.

Ordered the Sachs for $14.06 each from Rockauto. Shipping was $5.19 via Priority Mail.
Total: $33.31, done deal!

The replacement procedure is on page 20-123 in the 2004 TL factory service manual.
There's practically nothing to it!

I've used the rock auto ones on my Ford Explorer tailgate, rear window and hood. They work well and without problems. Save the money, we need it for the 93 octane gas pump.

The first time mine fell on me was a year ago. I'm only under the hood twice a year so I put it off and eventually forget about them until the hood falls on me again, good timing on this thread, going to buy a set.

Mine has been out for over a year maybe even 2. Guess I need to pony up the 35 bucks and buy a replacement pair. Thanks DMZ for doing the research.

Thought I'd throw my support behind the Sachs struts from RockAuto. I have an 06 and they fit perfectly and work well. I was shocked at how bad mine had become after I installed the new ones. They practically lift my hood up for me. I pick it up about a foot and then they take over and up it goes, and it feels totally solid at the top now. It take a good bit of force to get it to start closing. I'm very pleased. I just hope these last at least as long as the stock ones. They were totally worth the $35.

did you just buy two of the same part number (SG326009) or is there a separate one for the L and the R strut? because the OEM part number specify a separate one for the L and the R one

Sorry to dig up an old thread...but my hood decided to land (softly) on my head the other day and used it as support. I just checked Rockauto, can someone confirm and I see they only have 1 brand in stock. Can someone confirm the right part, its SACHS Part # SG365001 for $13.26 a piece. Might buy a pair...Thanks guys.

If you look up the year of your car it's only going to list the parts compatable with that year. Sounds about right though.

What I'm wondering is... If SACHS has a lifetime warranty and the OEM are SACHS can I send the old parts back to them in the new package and get a refund? How does that work?

in the tech world, "OEM" hard drives are warrantied by the company that put them into their computers (i.e. Dell, HP, Lenovo handles warranty and not Western Digital who made the hard drive, regardless of WD's end user warranty). In this case, Honda put in Sachs struts in their cars. Honda handles the replacement.

SACHs warranties would likely only affect those bought aftermarket (just like any hard drive you buy to upgrade the one that came with a computer). Sachs would likely request proof of purchase, and once they see you bought them from honda they would probably refuse replacement and tell you to go through Honda.
