HELP, Rattle/grind from engine/transmission...yes I've searched!

I just recently bought a 2007 TL-S. Car has 98,xxx miles on it. The day I bought I noticed a very subtle grind/rattle coming from the engine. I asked the owner and he said it was no big deal and its a rattle coming from one of the plastic pieces or catalytic converter. Car drives fine and shifts great but that rattle is annoying the crap outta me and I have no idea what it can be.

At cold starts, its pretty noticeable but once you drive the car for about 45 mins to an hour, the noise goes away but is still there, just not as loud. I popped the hood and it seems as so it's coming somewhere from the passenger side of the motor. Im just hopping its not a major issue like a transmission or internal engine problem.

Any suggestions or help would be great! I also noticed that the noise kinda appears all the way up to 3,900 rpms, anything pass 3,900 rpms the rattle/grind goes away. I'm pretty sure it's not a "pinging" issue but then again I haven't had to pump gas for the car yet.

HELP PLEASE!

Dat,
I got your PM. Yes, this does seem like the same issue I had (Noise #2 in my thread). Looks like you're due for the 105k timing belt/water pump service. Make sure to replace your auto tensioner, not just the pulley, when they do that service. The part isn't expensive, but it is a ton of labor and it is the same labor needed to get at the timing belt anyway. Good luck.

I'm having a very similar problem with my car, I have an '04 TL 6MT with about 145,000 miles on it. I hear the rattle right around the 2200-2300 RPM mark but it goes away above and below that mark. It doesn't seem to be affecting the car's performance at all but it is very annoying. I can hear it in gears 1-3 very easily, it is a little more faint in gear 4 and I don't hear it at all in gears 5 or 6. On my car it sounds like it is coming from the front underside of the engine or possibly the middle underside of the engine. I'm hoping that there is just something loose somewhere. I always use premium gas from Shell or Mobil, preferably Shell. I change the oil every 5,000-6,000 miles and use Pennzoil Full Synthetic. Also just changed the spark plugs about a month or so ago (that made a huge difference in MPG!). Someone please tell me this is not a major issue.

Fahseel,
I think your issue may be different than Dat's. Sounds like you have the heatshield rattle. See my thread for the difference:

Thanks a bunch for your input! I'm currently in the process of order a timing belt kit and bring it to Acura or a reputable shop here to have it replaced. I was wondering, in this link do I need item #'s 9 and 10? I know all the main parts I need, just wondering about those two items.

Dat,

I don't know since I did not supply the parts, but 14520-RCA-A01 is the part I did not replace when I did the timing belt service, but I should have since I later had to replace it to get rid of the noise.

Take a look at this thread for info:
A-122: DIY - 105k Service: Timing Belt, Water Pump, Spark Plugs, Thermostat *PICS*

Also, this specific post from that thread has part numbers:

Thanks jhumbo! I had to post under the name Fahseel before because I was having problems with my password, this is my actual account.

Anywho, I have yet to take my car in to confirm but I looked at the thread that you linked to and am pretty confident that it is the heat shield. Your video for noise #1 is almost identical to what I'm experiencing. I'm just relieved to know that it shouldn't be terribly expensive to fix ($250 or so). I was worried that this was somehow tied to my clutch. I'll update here once it's fixed.

Thanks again man, Huge Help!
