HELP me diagnose.....this shake/shimmy

Disclaimer: I have searched high and low on the forum for several months now regarding my issue and have come up with some possible causes and solutions. I'd like to get a fresh take on this...

Problem:
  • shake/ shimmy / vibration
  • Occuring at low RPM around 30-35mph 1400-1800 RPM during acceleration
  • emmanating from driver's side (it appears)
  • Shaking felt it would seem at the front driver side wheel, throughout the entire front end, under the floor board, and in the steering wheel
  • As long as this speed / rpm is maintained the shaking / vibration remains

Diagnostic / Work History
  • Problem has been present with current Tires and prior set of tires
  • New tires have been balanced and car is in allignment
  • replaced all three motor mounts (and problem persists)
  • Front Brakes replaced / rotors machined

Car Specs
  • 2004 TL 105k Miles
  • Original Owner
  • Original Tranny

I know from my searches that has been discussed a "low RPM shutter" which there is a consensus that 3 solutions could be present; EGR Valves, Torque Converters and Axles (recommended Raxles).... It seems this is more then just a low RPM shutter at this point

I appreciate you guys taking the time to look at this thread and help me through this trying time.

Nice organized post.

I'm voting axles. That's the most likely

Sounds like torque converter shutter to me - take ur car to your acura dealer and have them check for any kind of ecm/pcm software updates. Then change your trans fluid and use only honda/acura atf if you do it yourself and see if that helps

Its definitely time for ATF fluid change, i'll do that this weekend.. So you dont recommend the Redline ATF or Amsoil or other ATF's others rave about?

How can i self Diagnose the Axles? Short of disassembling and seeing if they are bent?

Have you tried bumping it into neutral to see if the vibration is still there if it is wouldn't that eliminate the transmission?

i've had the same vibration in my TL at 48k miles. the dealer said it was my inner CV joint that was worn. my other axle had a worn outer CV joint with the classic "click" or knocking sound during turns. both of my axles were replaced and the car has been happy ever since.

i, too, had gone through a tire change and alignment at the same time when my car started to act up (it was doing it well before the tire replacement though). i had the new tires road force balanced and the vibration on acceleration was still there. had the axles replaced.

You can it's up to you but I only use OEM ATF but if you do then you would need to flush the tranny out cuz you don't want to mix different ATF's

flushing is terrible for these transmissions i wouldnt do that to her... from what the ATF pros on the site say is the redline / amsoil is compatible with the Z1 Honda Spec fluids, if anything it would be a 3x3x3

I believe this is a false statement, I'm sure plenty of people (including myself) on the forum have mixed different fluids especially when they have no clue what was in it initially. I've been doing drain and fills with redline D4 which I have one more to do then putting in redline type F for my final drain and fill. I'm sure theres people who used redline and OEM together and their car is fine.

Update

Just installed the RAXLES... and did the second of the 3x3x3 tranny fluid change...

There is no longer the shimmy/shake as there was before; i believe the raxles have solved this problem.

She feels great....
