Headlight Restoration

will the same concept of wet sanding it down with 1000 grit than sanding again with 2000 grit and finish with a headlight compound work on the inside of the clear lense. I was installing my zkwr and got some of the sealant on clear housing side, so i used goo gone to help remove it but it seams that the goo gone messed it up. So my first thoughts are that it should be ok to do so since the whole housing is made of one piece but i just need to be sure be for i go and mess it up even more.

Theoretically it should work, but I've never done it or seen anyone do it.
At this point, what do you have to lose?

Thats my exact feeling right now. Worst case scenario is i have to buy a new headlight for the clear housing. But would i need to do the whole headlight or just the part that was messed up.

OUCH! What kind of sealant did you use? Did it actually mess up the plastic or can you just not get the glue off the lens?

I'd concentrate on the bad area. I'd use a high speed buffer with paint abrasives if it were me. NAPA has a nice line of different cuts depending on how aggressive you want to get with it. I'd take the light out too to prevent any paint damage.

no this is inside the headlight so i would need to take it off the car bake it and separate the clear housing from the back housing. The damage is from goo gone, which i think as some kind of cleaner that eats away at plastic. So i am planning on using Meguiars PlastX to try and see if i can back to good shape but if that fails than i will try with the 1000 and 2000 grit sand paper.

The PlastX does wonders on headlight lenses man. If all else fails, pick up a 3M headlight restoration kit. They are the sh!t, but mostly used for older corroded headlights.. I'm not sure how this will work with it being on the inside of the light. Whatever you do, make sure you use a buffer.

I really think it will work.
When I was a kid, I tried cleaning a sticker off a tape case with goof off and man did it get foggy.

Give it a whirl! If worst comes to worse, try the VHT on the amber portion (clear portion for you).

Check my DIY in the 3G Garage on "restoring" the headlight. I'm lazy right now or I would link it for you.

You can use P500 then P800 then P3000 sandpaper then use a plastic polish (preferably 3M) after. I did this over the weekend and was really pleased with the results given that my headlights had been sprayed with a smoked type of paint. Also I find it works better when you keep the sanding paper wet.

Thanks for the help. But i think i will just try and buff it out first before i do any sanding. Ill leave the sanding for the last resort.
