First Oil Change?

Hey everyone, I got a KBP 07 TL-S in June and I have about 1.5k-1.6kmiles on it. My car oil life indicator says im at 70%.

A friend of mine was telling me that there are more "metally bits" in the oil since its a new car and because of the break in and told me I should do an oil change.

I talked to two people at Acura when I was asking to schedule an appt. for an oil change and they just told me to wait until i was at 3k miles.

I was just wondering how many miles other people had when they got their first oil changes, and if I should go and change it ASAP, or just wait till I have accumulated 3k miles.

Thanks. I <3 my car!

change it when the car tells you to. The factory fill oil has anit-wear additives in it that insures a proper break in and as well helps with those metal particles. The filter should catch them anyway

^^ He's the man. The 1st factory oil has a high Moly content. Wait for the MID - we got to about 4500 miles when it started to tells us to do the A1 service.

Also, while opinions differ, many recommend the 1st oil change with non-synthetic (dino) oil and then Full Synthetic for every oil change after. You can search this site for the discussions on when to go to Full Synthetic Oil.

Hiko_Seijuurou, im RK fan too ..

its ok to wait for the car to tell you, it's been pretty acurrate. whether it was regular or full synthetic, the percent life left was accurate for me. i could go up to 5k with the synthetic, i usally change it around 4k..

Wait for the MID. I have 2100 miles on my car and the oil life is at 70%.

You can change the factory fill oil as soon as you like to get those little metal bits out, but if you do you will want to put an additive package in the new oil to provide the high moly content that the engineers intended to be in there for 6000 miles or so. I used Valvoline Syn Power oil treatment to provide the protection.

Quote from an Acura Rep:

"At the time of production, the original oil used in all Acura automobiles has additives to seat internal bearing surfaces. This oil is designed and intended for use withing the first 12 months or 7,500. Unfortunately, we do not provide this product for sale in the retail market."

Is aftermarket additive the same, I dunno??

the oil gurus through analysis of the factory fill had determined that the high moly content was the only real difference, so that is what your looking to replace or provide with the additive.

The factory oil also contains high levels of silicon and barium along with the molydenum.

Not to sound paranoid but how will I know the mechanics put in synthetic oil. Do I have to wait for the MID display to say 10,000 miles on it?

Why don't people simply read/follow the owner's manual (and the maintenance minder)???

I'm changing mine when the maintenance minder tells me to.

Follow that logic and the engine will last longer than the rest of the vehicle (and /oryour duration of ownership).

Change it yourself if you're worried about getting ripped off. Oil changes on this car are a snap. (I remove my passenger wheel in order to gain better access to the filter, but that's a 5 minute job.)

Yes and it's been proven that Havoline has probably one of the highest amounts of Moly available out of a dino oil. I would personally replace the factory fill around 2-3k miles. It has been proven that the factory fill is pretty much dead when it reaches around 20-30% on the MID and depending how you drive your car on a day to day basis. Also if you are looking for good filters I would highly recommend Purolator PureOne oil filters or Hamp Synergy (Honda Japan filters).

The MID is a gauge/tool it is not 100% accurate. I recommend getting a UOA (used oil analysis) done and or looking at some UOA's for specific oils and looking to see what the average oil life for that specific brand is. Some oil brands may be near their break down at 3k miles where others may be able to go 7-10k miles with no problems. Personally I am sticking with 3k mile oil changes and should be having an Oil analysis done shortly on my current oil of choice (Havoline) to see what I need to change if anything. UOA's give you a good idea of what metals if any are wearing more than they should, if your oil and air filters are doing their jobs correctly, and about how much more life you could have gotten out of your current oil or how soon you should have changed it before you actually did.
