engine whinning while ilde and turning

never had any problems with my 04 tl 52k on it until now. its been really cold in NY lately and just this morning, i started the car cold, and heard a loud whinning noise coming from under the hood. (something that i have never heard before) the noise increases with the rpms and also happens when turning the steering wheel in either direction. the noise didnt go away when the car was warm either.

anyone have this problem before?? i want to say it has something to do with the power steering b.c the noise gets louder when the steering wheel is turned but i dont know.

should the car be brought in for service asap or can i drive with it. thanks in advance

a quick update. the car was cold the 2 times today i started it when had these problems. about 7 hours between each time of use and its 30 degrees outside.

the thrid time i started it, it was only about 2.5 hours since last used and the car was still warm and there was no noticable whine like before. just the usual very low pitch.

this is what im afraid of when it goes to the dealer and they they cannot reproduce the noise leaving me SOL.

I was gonna say perhaps a belt is loose or otherwise near the end of its life.. but then I read about the steering making a difference in the noise.

In what condition is the power steering fluid and is the level where it should be?

I have an 04 with about 42,000 and had to take it in for the same problem. It was an "O" ring failure on the power steering pump that let air get into the system and that was the noise. Really got loud when you turned the wheel. They replaced the entire pump not just the ring because air in the system can damage the pump. Was covered by warranty.

the ps fluid is between the lines and fairly new. today the car did not make the noise as loud as yesterday even on 2 cold starts but i could still hear the whine when i revved the engine or turned the wheel.

i feel like i have to wait until the noise is loud like the other day and happens everytime i start the car otherwise the dealer will say they cant reproduce the noise

Take it to the dealer in the morning before it really gets warmed up.

FWIW, I had the same problem - twice. I just got my second p/s pump replacement a couple of weeks ago. I just noticed the other day that something is leaking, so I think they messed something up during the install. Need to call them and have them check it out.

Take it in, there are enough failures of this part that service knows what it needs

Ask for a loaner if you need

thanks guys. im taking it in monday morning when they open. the dealer is about 7 miles away and im afraid that by the time i get there and the car is warm, the noise will be less noticable. after a long drive(about 25 miles) the noise dissapears as well.

even tonight after 8 hours of sitting, there was no noise at idle, but this time there was that whinning when turning the wheel.

i had 2 power steering pumps put in since i had the car because it was leaking and now its making a howling noise only when cold and turning steering wheel. it sounds like another power steering problem again. 2004 6mt pisses me off because i have no time to bring it in

suprisingly enough, the dealer called me only one day after i dropped the car off and told me it was ready. it was the PS pump. with labor, the total was about 396.00 covered under the extended warrenty. its already paying for itself.

I had the same problem (whine noise tied to engine RPM, REALLY loud when cold). I fortunately found this thread and then took the car to the dealer. They said it is the power steering pump. They are on national backorder so they gave the car back to me to drive around. I guess it's not critical enough not to drive the car around with.

They just called now after 1 week and said they have the replacement pump in.

Bump :-)

So, i'm guessing that if i'm having this exact issue, and now past 50k, i'm SOL???

If so, is the failure the pump, o-ring or something else? I'm not paying $400
