Engine Whining?

Hey guys!

A few months ago, I heard this whine coming from my engine. It was a low whine, and when I turned the steering wheel it got louder. The Acura I went to said the accessory belt needed to be changed. So I did that, but now it's back. What do you think it is?

Had this exact issue with my 2006 TL. Cold start, and there was a whine until the car heated up especially in cold weather. What it might be is that the Power Steering pump has lost suction around the replacement O-Ring and is sucking air into the PS system. Take it back to the dealer and have them fix it under the o-ring recall.

Do you happen to have the information on that recall?

http://owners.acura.com/service-maintenance/recalls The O-Ring should have been replaced when they replaced the Power Steering hose. If they didn't do it that is likely what is causing the noise.

OP dont take it in for just the o-ring replacement. DIY its easy and wont take no more than 5 minutes.

IIRC there is thread in the garage section that will show you.

Edit- After re-reading this, do you have any leaks? How is your steering i.e. hard to turn? You said that it gets loud when you turn which may indicate your rack n pinion.

It would help if you gave us the mileage of the car.

Yeah, the first thing I thought of was power steering.

I have 188k miles on my car. No leaks. Steering is fine.

The noise, for me, just started happening at random. Maybe it was cold, maybe it wasn't. I can't remember. But it is getting cold out...

Right but they probably didn't replace the O-ring where the hose connects to the pump and that is failing which is where the air is getting pulled into the system and making the noise.

My 06 with 130K had this issue all Winter until the car got warm. If you let it go it may ruin the pump since it is working harder to move fluid through the system and letting air into it which is likely dirty and contaminating the PS fluid, and then you have larger issues to deal with. Replace the O-Ring or take it back to where you had the hose replaced and have them replace the O-ring. Depending on how the PS fluid looks also you might want to flush it and replace it as well.
