i also was told it might be eating away my power? do you think this is a big problem? i dont want my car to explode on me or something..

couldnt tell a thing from that fast video.. but it does sound like your valves. you should adjust your valves. it does cost alot tho. and it does rob your engine of power.

sounds like the valves. theres always going to be a certain level of tapping with these cars. A valve adjustment runs about 300 bucks from the dealer. the manual recommends getting the valves checked at 105k miles. if it bothers you then just get the valve adjustment.

check the oil level first. if the oil is too low it will make a loud tapping noise like this. this was my car when the oil was about 1.5 quarts too low

They will surely charge you a fee to just even pull your car in the shop.. you know the stealerships are. I'd say you found a local shop that you trust and has a good rep, and let them take a look at it before taking it to a dealer.

I dont think this is nothing more than a valve adjustment, since I had my engine swapped out at about 78K back when mine was ticking very loudly. I have a video. I still need to repost it on the forum I made, but it did do it to mine as well. And I found out by Acura telling me through a brake fluid change. "Engine Knock".

im a former Acura Technician. ALL VTEC engines have a slight tapping noise.. but if its a lil TOO loud.. u may need a valve adjustment. as for the process.. we all know valves move up and down an infinate number of times. u have a intake valve which brings in air and an exhaust valve which rids of the gasses down to your muffler.. your whole engine is running in sync w/ one another.. with that being said.. your valves are ALWAYS going to run out of wack after so many miles and they need to be adjusted so all the valves can run in sync w/one another.. as for the hp rob.. if one of your exhaust valves is not opening up enough to let gas through.. theres a problem.. and if one of your intake valves is not letting enough air through to mix w/the gas.. theres a problem= horse power loss

Yup, sums it up nicely. Might as well pony up for the valve adjustment...

Mine does the same thing. I have a 07 TL-S. Can you adjust these valves? I thought they were self adjusting hydraulic valves. And is this sound harming the engine? I just got this car a few days ago and it only has 52k on it. It's a 6sp. But I hear that tapping only when I rev low...when I rev it on up it seems not to get any louder but its still annoying to hear.

Could it be the rotary muffler bearing? Actually, at low RPM my 08 (S w/20K miles) ticks too, I'll update the thread as soon as I find out. But I'm thinking it's a belt or pulley - if it's a valve - it's pretty loud.

Dammit. Hearing these videos made me realize I need a valve adjustment also. Lots of clatter.

I just picked up an 07 TL-S MT a few week ago. When I test drove it, I heard this ticking noise from the engine (it was very noticable)...it got faster as I rev'd.

I had the dealer check before I bought it. They found that there was a bulletin out for this issue. They said they replaced the timing belt/water pump and a couple other belts. After that I did not hear the same loud ticking, but now if I hear it really closely, I hear a very light ticking. This may be the valves.

My '06 TL has a slight tick to it, but don't think it's anywhere near as clicky as the videos on here...

Question: I've been working on getting my car to run as smoothly as possible and have already replaced cracked engine mounts, had a tune up, etc... it's much smoother, but not perfect like I want it to be.

Would having this valve adjustment on my car additionally help with the rough idle I experience in the mornings? I already replaced the spark plugs as well...

I think some valve clatter is a characteristic of the vtec engine. Noticeable ticking is not.

as others have said, some chatter is normal, however the video you posted sounds slightly more than normal. The few solutions you have are to have the valves adjusted or look for some other causes such as the Belt tensioner. A noisy tensioner can cause the issue you are having as it's not holding the belt properly per revolution of the motor.

Check your plugs to see if they are tight. It sounds funny but I had the same problem until one day my car got louder and I "felt" the tick above the plug. Turns out my spark plug was loose and was jumping. Other then that, its the valves.

Depends on if your dealer thinks its a normal or abnormal amount of ticking.

I got the same problem and a local stealership quoted me $600 to fix it I said forget it. From what I was told its not covered under the warranty unless I was lied to. Then again at the stealership they would tell you its no even if its covered just to ge money out of us. So most likely I will have my uncle take a look at it he is a mechanic, I just dont want to incovenience him.

In my opinion, nothing in these vids sounds abnormal. Most TL's sound like that, nothing to worry about. Honda engines have that valve chatter, mine sounds exactly like the first vid. Second vid sounded like a slight vacuum leak aside from the ticking noise.

This is a great example...BUT this is a NonVtec engine.

not sure BUT I'm sure there is something different to adjusting valves.

Not sure if you have resolved this or not, but I had a similar noise and it turned out to be my timing belt tensioner.

You can take a look at my thread to hear my video of my noise:

Sounds completely normal to me. It's hard to tell if it's louder than normal from a video but the sound is definately normal. A combo of valves and fuel injectors. Going with a good 30wt oil quieted the valvetrain a bit. Mine is mostly injectors at this point.

It sounds pretty loud to me. But it sounds just like the 2nd video on this page.
https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-problems-fixes-114/lets-play-name-tune-%5Bvideos-attached%5D-794713/

And they said it was a belt tensioner.
