Got back home and noticed my brake lights were stuck on no matter the pedal position! Contorted under the column and pulled off the black plastic cover that hides the stuff above the pedals. Found the brake switch and also the problem!

It should be pretty self explanatory...
1) unplug the wiring harness out of the switch
2) twist out the switch
3) insert the new switch with the brake pedal in it's resting position - slide the switch in...it will make contact with the white plastic attached to the pedal..when the white button thing is pressed in and you cannot push the switch in anymore, twist clockwise & it should lock into place...obviously you want the white button thing to be almost all the way in because when you push the brake pedal, the white button thing will come out and turn on the brake lights etc...
4) plug in the wiring harness
5) test and put the panels back together and you're done!!!
EDIT: I don't know why all my pics are so small..this has never happened to me before...
If you look at the switch in above pictures, the switch touches a WHITE CLIP that is attached to the brake pedal. My clip (blue) came apart and the switch was not operating correctly.
but almost $10 at local auto stores!!! Next time you buy anything for your car, pick up an extra one as this one was factory from the car almost 17 years old!

You were lucky it did not affect the actual drivability of your car and you made it home to find the annoying problem.
At the clutch inhibiter switch assembly, that very same pedal stopper pad will ruin your day & leave you stranded if it 'crumbles' with age on a manual transmission car.

That's shitty; maybe we should suggest it as preventative maintenance for clutch and brake pedal bc that would have been a FAT ticket for non-functioning brake lights in a major city.
I was tempted to use some self adhesive pads for the bottom of dinning chairs as a temp fix to save $5 and wait for the $3 on ebay vs $10 from autozone. But decided wasn't worth having an issue a week down the road before the bit arrives. Either way I got it fixed properly. Autozone had the doorman part:
Thanks for this. I was going to bed last night & saw some brake lights reflecting off my neighbor's window. I went outside & checked things out. I saw the blue clip shattered on the floor.
I ended up having to pry the panel screw out, it wouldn't back out. I ordered the part from Amazon as that was the least expensive option. However, they bumped the delivery for 9 days from now. So, as a temp measure, I put a bolt in. That seems to be working fine.
