Driveline Noise
Driveline Noise
Ok...this may sound strange, but what is considered the 'normal' driveline noise/sound (while rolling/driving) for our TL's?
My car has a slight 'whirring' noise which is heard, but heard easier if you have the windows up. I took it into the dealership, they checked it out, drove it and they said that was the normal driveline sound which is a normal characteristic of the TL's. I read a thread which spoke of 'transmission gear whine'.
To be honest with you, it may just be the tires (Bridgestone RE960AS) which I recently had installed, but I never paid attention and it may have been the same with the original Michelins. Don't get me wrong, the BS's aren't loud or anything, but maybe just because they are a high performance tire.
Hope this made sense!
Thanks

Well the noise could be tire noise, you may want to check and make sure that the tire pressures are set to door spec, overinflation can cause the tires to be a little noisier. Could also just be the type of tire and the tread pattern and how agressive the tire is. Chopping of the tires will also cause a noise this can happen if the car is out of alignment, or tires arent rotated religiously. If it is not tires it could be a bad wheel bearing but always suspect the tires first.
Tires typically make more of a drone or a hum than a whine. I have the transmission gear whine and am awaiting a new transmission right now. I've also had tires that used to drone when driving - especially at speeds below 30mph.
In addition, the transmission gear while is usually from 1800 RPM to 3000 RPM (in all gears -- but when you're in 5th, there's so much road noise you may not hear it).
