Double engage into drive

Hey all,

Looking for some advice here...
2004 5AT built after recall
34500 original miles
3x3 done w/ amsoil super shift non f-m about 2500 miles ago.

After the 3x3, the transmission performs pretty well. It is not slipping or shuttering and shifts normally once driving 99.9% of the time, there is an occasional rough down shift. (I heard thats normal)

My real issue is this double engage into drive. Ever since the 3x3, the number of times the tranny will double engage into drive has gone down, but it still seems to do it at least once a day. I have not done pressure switches yet, and even if I do I do not see them fixing the double engage. It just seems...defective.

I am at a loss because the car is pretty much still new and has been kept in excellent condition by the previous owner and myself...

What is the deal with the double engage? I feel like if I ignore it I will have a failed tranny on my hands after some miles pile up...

Please help!

My 2004 shifted into drive better once I replaced the filter. The dealer said that the filter had a bypass and it affected nothing by being clogged, but it definitely went into reverse and drive smoother with a new filter.

The switches fix this.

When you shift into drive, the TL engages 3rd gear first and then 1st gear. This makes the shift from neutral less harsh and it's normal. However, once the 3rd gear pressure switch gets old and out of calibration it will hang in 3rd gear longer before shifting back down to 1st.

So the switches will greatly reduce the time between the two bumps. It will always be there because it's supposed to be but it will barely be noticeable.

They also make the downshifts much smoother. With the Super Shift and switches it will feel better than new.

I knew the tl shifted into a higher gear before going into first by the feel of it and several cars do this. I assumed it was second, not third but one member (can't remember his name) posted from a manual that it hits third first. I believe its buried in the switches thread that I started. He's also the one that showed switch values between old and new.

I did my switches when I did my filter. It worked. I apologize for the half-assed post above where I forgot about the switches... it makes perfect sense now.

Dude I can't thank you enough for once again putting my fears to rest and the amount of knowledge you bring to this website. I picked a good TL and I love my car lol!
