Cruise Control Issue

I just bought a 05 TL and the cruise control only works if the headlights are turned off. As soon as you turn the lights on the cruise disengages. The dealer after having the car all day told me that the tail light needs to be replaced. Has anyone else had an issue like that. Dealer wants 500 to replace the driver side tail light.

Are you sure?

Did you ask the dealer what the fuck does the driver side tail light have to do with malfunctioning cruise control??

The dealer said it had to do with the circuit in the tail light that kills the cruise control. I know it sounds crazy and thats why i wanted to know if someone else had any such issues. I am going to disconnect the tail light and try it again and see if it works. i will report back the findings.

Lightbulb

Well i tested the cruise control after taking the connector off for the led's from the left rear tail light. AND IT WORKED !!!!! so i guess i need to get a new led board for the light and then i will be set. Hopefully no one else would run into this issue but if you do try unplugging the tail lights one by one just to make sure you don’t have the same issue as mine.

When you apply the brakes cruise control shuts down. Been that way for 50 years. It never occurred to me to wonder how that happened. I assumed that it was a switch in the braking system somewhere. Now I know--power to the brake lights also shuts down the cruise. Duh.

Well I finally got the replacement taillight from eBay last night and when I was replacing the LED board I found out what the actual problem was. The wiring for the board was not routed through the proper opening so it was crushed under the plastic part and the wires were shorting out. The lights worked fine but for some reason cruise control didn’t like it too much. It’s all fixed now it cost me 60 bucks for the light on eBay but I could have fixed it for free had I pulled the light out before last night. I am just happy it’s working again. I also didn’t have to remove the whole bumper to get the light out... just the bolt by the trunk and pulled it out enough to get to the bolts. I don’t know why everyone takes the whole bumper off for changing their lights.

I had the same issue

I know this thread is really old, but just wanted to chime in that the fix described by this poster worked for me also. Cruise worked fine with no lights on. As soon as lights were turned on, the cruise control quit. I had 3 LED's out on my tail lights. I ordered a used tailight board from eBay and and it works now.

Thanks for the original post and fix. Worked for me!
