Crank seal oiL leak

when I went to the dealer like a month ago it was the last time my car would be under warranty and they said the oil pump is leaking and would need to be replaced. So they did that and I also got the timing belt package since they had a decent deal on that. I went to my mechanic and he said there's oil leaking from the crank seal. Not sure what to do because that's a lot of work to change the seal and i already did the timing belt. Not sure if this issue is the dealers fault for not replacing the seal when putting in a new pump or what.

I also had a rear main seal leak. It was almost $2,000 of work! In your scenario, can you try to argue that the original problem was misdiagnosed while under warranty, so the correct repair is still outstanding?? You might want to research dealership misdiagnosis laws for your particular state if they give you a hard time.

my question is how the new oil pump ties in to the crank seal. Is a new oil pump supposed to come with a new crank seal? Or was the crank seal the issue to begin with?

my mechanic told me the crank seal is supposed to come with the oil pump, but the dealer may not agree with him so yeah I'm going to have argue with them. And then there's the issue of my car now having 103k miles compared to 99k when I went to the dealer to get it fixed.

2k for a new main seal? Wow that's what I'm worried about...

TAZ1811 was talking about the rear main seal, and that's indeed a lot of money to replace. You have a problem with the front seal, changing that is way cheaper.

If they really replaced the pump, they replaced the seal as well because the seal is in the pump. You can't remove it from the old pump and put it in the new one w/o damaging the seal in the process. Of course it's possible that they didn't actually replace the pump. They may have just removed it, cleaned and replaced the gasket between the pump and the engine block (if that's where the leak was), and put the old pump back. In this case you'll still have the old front seal.

Okay I went to see the dealer. It is not the crank seal. They are going to put some dye in it and then I have to drive around for a bit and they are going to see if they can find the leak

One thing I always tell people with leaks, especially on a dynamic seal, is to replace the PCV valve. Ours is a good design and rarely stops working but if it gets stuck closed it can cause leaks. Plus, it's cheap.

Crank seal oiL leak

Oh man, GREAT advice gents!! My old 6th gen accord has a rear main seal leak. I'll try the PCV valve trick because that's cheap enough! He'll sure beats having to pop off the tranny...

THANKS !

How does replacing a faulty PCV valve prevent rear main seal leak?
I just found out from my mechanic that my front and rear main seals are both leaking oil.
My oil pan is also leaking.

the pcv valve helps regulate pressure inside the engine. if the pcv valve is bad then there might be pressure buildup causing oil to come out of seals. some users have reported rear main seal leaks going away after changing pcv valve. hope that helps

Thank you. I will try replacing the pcv valve. I'm hoping this is the culprit as it doesn't seem likely that those above mentioned gaskets / seals could have gone bad all at once.

Dang blast from the past, that Accord's tranny took a dump so i no longer needed to worry about the RMS

But agreed with what Yvuru mentioned PCV is a cheap fix that sure beats splitting your trans/engine to get to the RMS
