Help! Tail lights, 4 side marker and front amber lights not working.

Hey guys!

I tried searching for a while on this topic but couldn't find anything in the 3rd generation section. Maybe I'm blind, i dunno but I did make one hell of an effort to search around for help topics.

So my front amber lights, tail lights and side markers are not fully working on my 04 TL. the reason why I say fully is because the when I brake the tail lights come on and when I signal the front ambers and tail light signals work. The side markers don't stay on at all.

I'm a bit confused as to what the problem may be? Problem with ground? Relay? Short? I don't really know as I am not too inclined with electrical or wiring.

I am the second owner of this vehicle and the first owner actually put an 08 type s front end on it with fog lights but the fog lights are not functional as there is no switch inside for it. These are all the mods he has done to the car as far as I know.

So can somebody shed some light as to what the problem may be, perhaps may be give me some possible scenarios? what to look for?
Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks a bunch guys!

I assume you have the lights turned on? If the switch is off those lights will never come on of course.

And maybe the fogs come on with the stock switch on the stalk if the previous owner did that mod.

Yes the lights are switched on but the tail lights, front side amber lights or all 4 side markers don't come on.

The only time the tail lights and front amber lights come on is when I brake or turn my turn signals on.

They were all working before we had some rain, and I did some spirited driving on the highway. Thats the last I remember them working.

As for the fogs, I have no clue? I am going to ask the guy I bought it from.

It's a fuse. The usual way to describe what you're experiencing is "the parking lights aren't working." I don't know which one it is on the TL - but that's where you should look first.

***UPDATE***

I've replaced the #4 10a fuse underneath the hood 3 times and it keeps blowing.

I think it may be a short somewhere.... I dunno?

Any thoughts guys?

Was just about to mention that fuse for you - glad you found out it was the fuse.

I'm assuming it was like this when you bought the car.

I'm willing to bet it's the wiring job for the fogs.

I've check and tested all the lights that are out with a voltage meter and tester light... All are fine and working... So the short has to be some where in the front perhaps?

No the parking lights were working when I bought it... It could be the foglights, they weren't functional when I bought the car so I don't even know of they are wired to anything, Ill have to check.

On the 05-08 they are black/red... But I couldn't a black/red wirew under the steering wheel where the ignition is.... Is it maybe a blue wire??

I need a schematic wiring diagram!!! I suck at this electrical stuff!!

The ground (negative) for the parking light on an 04' TL is actually black going from the light to ground and red/black going from the control module/relay to the parking lights.

I need to clarify a bit, the power in to the light is red/black. The ground is black. I looked at the wiring diagram right after work, I have no idea what I was thinking. Sorry.

The first thing I would have checked for is the fog lights, especially since you know the fogs don't work.

2004 TLs DID NOT come with lower fog lights.
The only way you could get lower fog lights to work is if you have a wire harness that's piggy backed off a trigger wire which is most likely your parking light wire.

I see what ur saying! The car has an 08 type s front end on it. The only thing is, the fogs weren't working to begin with, but the parking lights were working but all of a sudden crapped out.

But I will check the fog lights, just havent had time to do it

Side markers not working

If someone installed after market stuff I’d suggest looking for frade open wires that may have touched! Otherwise Change out signal light sockets!! This will most likely fix the side marker and tail light issue, as for the fog lights at tail light relay take a test light hook to positive on battery and make contact with each of the prongs on fuse box under hood!! Fog lights should light up also look on fuse box find fuse to fog lights and do the same they should light up!! If they don’t put new bulbs I’d start with one as they ar 25.00 each!! Or get at junkyard like I did!!
