Take it as a coincidence your airbag light is on while the dashboard is cracked.
A cracked dashboard isn't associated with any airbag sensors, and if it was then you bet there would be a recall.

Have the airbag code read with a scan tool to verify.

Flogged and beaten? So should the person who wrote the routing algorithms for our Navigation system!

Dash Recall

No debris will go flying and there will be no additional risk to occupants.

The only thing they will probably do is issue an internal memo or a TSB about the issue and advise a better replacement idea/procedure. Maybe they might even start selling a new vinyl skin for it!
This isn't nessesarily the standard for Auto Manufacturers. My 2007 Toyota Camry had a very similar issue with the dash (you could put your finger right through it on a hot day!). They did send out a Recall, but because it wasn't a Safety issue, the Recall was not a lifetime recall. It was only good until I believe July 1st, 2018. However they did pay 100% of the cost.

If you use a Coverlay, please insure you use a sunshade. The one day I forgot to use a sunshade in Florida. My Coverlay warped just above the airbag, and now I have to try to glue the damn thing down again. If that doesn't work, I'm going to try to replace it with Rock Auto, where I bought it.
