Clunk when accelerating after reversing and turning wheel

I am getting a very audible clunk when reversing out of the driveway, rotating the steering wheel about 75% before maxing out and then putting it into drive and accelerating. When I accelerate, that is the point where I hear the single clunk. The clunk also happens every now and then when at a stop light and I accelerate harder than normal. I have also noticed that handling has been getting a little sloppy. Also getting a slight vibration around the 20-30mph range.
  • Car has 124k on the clock.
  • Car is lowered and has a 1ish 2ish finger gap
  • Auto
  • Car was aligned about a month ago
  • Motor mounts replaced around 95k or so.
  • Lower control arm bushings replaced around 115k or so.

Not quite sure what it may be but from what I've read, it's likely to be the axle? maybe CV joints? If so, what will be the estimated cost of reapir?

bump.. i think raising up the front of the car would help. might need to check on the front stabilizer links as well.

pretty sure the sloppy handling has nothing to do with the clunking. sounds like your axles are wearing out and so are your shocks.

sounds like inner CV joints are going bad.

do you hear ticking?

try putting in "N" for a second to let the idle settle and then put into gear, if theres less clunk, it's for sure your axle's that need replacing

Hrm, I'll check it out tomorrow morning.

I don't hear any ticking at all. It's just one single loud clunk. I checked out the stabilizer link this afternoon and it was intact, secured and not loose.

check the bushings on the rear sway bar (RSB) and make sure they are nice and tight. As well check the sub-frame for any tears in the metal near the mounts.

No clunk while in Neutral. Would the bushings in the RSB affect my sloppy handling though?

ive had a similar problem like yours a few months ago whenever i accelerating from a dead stop or at a stop light, i hear a loud clunking sound. it turned out that both my front and side motor mounts where torn. does your steering wheel vibrate when the shifter is in Drive at idle?

This^^

Common issuse for these vehicles. Before doing axles you can purchase 2x new Axle nuts and replaced the old ones. I will tell you from personal experience that I started with new axles nuts which sloved the noise but ended up doing 2 new axles eventually for clicking noises on turns and while accelerating, tended to me more noticeable when in cold conditions and the grease inside the axles were sluggish.

No vibration while at a stoplight. Motormounts were replaced under warranty around 95k at dealership under extended warranty.

Yeah, I'm thinking it might be axles or the ball joint. Will be taking the car to a nearby mechanic to replace it.

Do you have instructions on how to do it? How's the aftermarket part from Autozone? I am thinking of doing it myself too. Just need to spend some time searching for the topic and DIY guide.

Had same problem, went to dealer three times. Fixes would last couple weeks. Final fix? They "replaced" not "re-tightened" my axle nuts or grease anything. Get new axle nuts put on. I've been good now for over 30K

sorry to revive this thread, but I am having similar problems and its bugging me real bad.
07 TL-S 48, 5XX miles, lowered on coilovers.

When I accelerate, that is the point where I hear multiple clunks. The clunks also happens every now and then when I come to a stop, or accelerate hard. On inclines (my driveway) i go up sideways at an angle which lifts up the front driver side wheel (the passenger side wheel + 2 rear are the only ones that are touching) I hear the multiple clunks clicks and so on... My strut bar is stipped of most of its bolts (installing an rv6 one soon) replaced the side and front motor mounts recently. So would replacing the axle nuts remedy the noise for the time being?
