Hey all,

Taking the car in this Friday to get it fixed. I have a clicking noise while turning under load (weight). Everyone seems to think that it's a bad outer joint, which ultimately means the axle is bad. Now, I've already spoken with Acura of Lynnwood and they've agreed to replace the axle. But now that I think about it, I only explained the symptoms, and although it seems to be for sure a bad axle (front, left), I don't want a perfectly okay part of the car replaced. Duh...

I insisted it was the axle upon diagnostic of a few people on here...I'm just looking for a "make sure"

Symptoms: Clicking (loud from outside) when taking a turn (turning wheel) at various speeds. I can make it be quiet if I coast around the corner at say...2 mph. Also, I'm hoping it's related, but the wheel, upon acceleration, SHOOTS left. Car always drifts to the left, no matter how flat the road is. I'm ALSO rubbing from time to time; not sure if it's related - there's a good amount of clearance (no finger gap), and I'm assuming it's just from the engine switching weight (seems to ONLY be when I put the car in reverse). Am I doing the right repair by changing out the axle? It's JUST the axle right (outer joints connected to the axle, yeah? It's the entire assembly - does it include the CV boot?)

Sounds like the CV joint. New assembly comes with new boot.

 

How many miles you have on the car? If it's still within warranty timeframe they will replace both of them.

I guess it is an outer joint. CV is constant velocity joint that is at the end of the axle near the tire side of the axle. When the rubber booties tear the grease leaks out and dirt gets in. This destroyers the ball bearings inside and it eventually falls apart.

They are more delicate than the U jointed axles but have much smoother turning characteristics.

 

Turn the wheel to the outer side of wherever the sound is coming from (if sound from right, then turn wheels all the way to the right; if from the left, turn the wheels all the way to the left). You will see a lot of grease. meaning your CV boots are gone. They just change out the axle as it is cheaper. Not covered under warranty. find an indy repair shop. the axle is costing like 70 for a GSP which is a NEW and not remanufactured unit, plus labor. cheaper than dealerhsip

 

yeah, i spoke with the dealer and they've agreed to do the job for a good discount - it compares to the price that i would be getting at an independent shop with use of an oem axle. only problem is, the last time i was under the car (a week ago), the cv boot was intact without any tears. is it possible to have gone bad internally, without any sort of tears?
