"Check Gas Cap"?? Anyone experienced this?

I went to fill my tank yesterday and when I got back in the car there was a "Check Gas Cap" Message on my informational screen? I took my gas cap off and put it back on (even waited for the 3 clicks) but the message stayed on the screen. It has been on all day? I don't want to take it to the dealer if I don't have to. Has anyone experienced this? Any idea's on how I can fix it?

I have not experienced that phenomenon in my TL, but did in my Saab. I think you have to go through several start/stop cycles to eliminate the warning light. It should "heal itself" in a few days. Be patient.

This happened to me as well... It took several days to go away, but it did indeed go away. When I called Acura they said it may take as long as 4 days... Wait it out. After 5 days, I'd go in for a look though...

I have had the same problem with my 07 TLS I took it the dealer once and they didn't find the root of the problem. It doesn't affect anything just the fact that it is annoying. My inidicator goes away after a few minutes.

That 3 clicks on the gas cap is a mandatory minimum
5 clicks is a good idea

It will cause serious running issues to attempt driving with cap loose

I thought it was just an emissions thing - that evaporated hydrocarbons contribute to smog? What other issues are there?

It's just for emissions. I usually leave mine running while filling it in the summer time and my light has never come on.

Just check the cap retighten several clicks, if the ecm/pcm detects everything with the evaporative to be operating normal with no evap leaks, it will take several drive cycles for the check gas cap message to go away. I would probably give it a week if it doesnt go away i would take it to the dealer!

The clicking gas cap is a torque wrench - when its tight to spec it clicks
3 clicks makes sure you know you did it fully

The whole car runs on little signals and closed loop systems- a cap with a bad seal ring will cause problems too. Running at idle in the gas station is one thing- driving on the road is another
It wont usually die in the first block- normally waits till the gas cap has fallen off the roof -never to be found- and then the car stops!

Seriously? The car will shut itself off if the you leave the gas cap off? That just doesn't sound right.

well- not so much shut itself off, as- quits running

Now- DISCLAIMER- I have not tried this on the TL
BUT have seen it with other cars
where driving off without the cap secured causes stumbling and erratic running and stalling

There has to be a reason they make a special gas cap and print right there-
tighten minimum 3 clicks and there is a warning system if its not done!

Well our vehicles have a fuel tank to hold gasoline, a pump to sent liquid fuel to the engine and measure the quantity of fuel remaining, and a canister to hold hydrocarbon vapor that would otherwise evaporate from the fuel tank into the environment. The canister is connected with the engine intake manifold by a purge solenoid valve that controls the extent to which vacuum in the intake manifold affects the canister. Without a gas cap there will be no vacuum so im sure the engine may not run right, not sure if it will shut off or not because i have never experienced this myself, but im sure it is very possible!

I took my car back to to the dealership because of this problem and I was told it was due to humidity which is BS because it happended in the cold. I spoke to the manager and had her order a new cap for me. I beleive it may be a deftective ring as well. The thing is that the message comes on at random. There is no pinpointed time when it lights up. I'll keep you informed of the outcome with the new cap.

Moisture in the system?
Add 1 can seafoam to gas tank and see if that helps

I had the cap replaced and so far so good no problems thus far. If others are having the same issue have the dealership replace the gas cap.

Gas Cap Alert - I tightened it

I shut the car off unscrewed it, then put it back on and clicked it a full turn like 7 - 10 clicks, not like it even matters I did it to just make sure. Then I turned on the car and scrolled through the menu's and that little envelope looking icon went away. Turns out the dim wit at the gas station did not put it back on properly. Another reason why full service in NJ blows.

This happened on the RDX Turbo loaner I was given while the dealer wasn't fixing my TL's spark knock issue. What's weird is that for the three days I had the RDX, I never put fuel in it. But on the third day (on the way to pick up the TL actually) the message came up. I made sure the cap was tight (it was), so I don't know what triggered it besides just a malfunction.

On the other hand, the turbocharger in the RDX made a lot of hissing noise, as if there was a leak somewhere in the intake system. It wasn't the smooth air rushing sound a turbocharged engine normally makes. I wonder if there was a leak and the ECU finally picked it up and blamed it on the Evap system. Unlikely I know, but funny if true.

BTW, I didn't care for the RDX at all. The engine and that turbocharger don't live up to their hype IMO.

Fuel Cap

MY TL-S has been to Springfield Acura 5 times for the same thing. It's now at Open Road in Wayne NJ. I had to contact the regional Supervisor Tony Dalia to get some assistance. All this drama I should have stuck with American cars at least they don't have problems until about 75K

It sounds like you just got the ugly one out of the litter this isnt a common problem on most hondas and acuras and mostly happens from a loose gas cap, i know this isnt your situation but man only makes the part and it isnt always produced perfectly. Evap problems could take some extensive diag. but there are only so many things that can cause the small evap leak! Hope your problem gets fixed.

there might be a leak in your EVAP (vapor recirculation) or fuel tank system.

I've had the same problem. My Check Fuel Cap light comes on at least once a week. It sometimes goes off within a few minutes and sometimes stays on a day or more. The light has even come on after I've used 3/4 tank of gas so it can't be an improper tightening technique.

Fuel Cap Message

I've posted on this issue a few months ago and yet again I am back with the same problem. I am scheduled to bring the car back from the eighth time for this same issue. The indicator and message comes on whenever. I was driving on I80 doing 80MPH and the light came on and stayed on for 40 minutes. I contacted Acura Customer Service and now I am fed up and will proceed if the problem persists I will take the next course of action to get out of my car. For a $40K it should not be at the dealership eight times for the samething. If anyone would like Customer Care's number please let me know. I am bringing the car to Bridgewater Acura this time and I also have a person directly involved with Acura Corp. this time.

I had same problem--repeatedly. I could not find a pattern with it. I had to convince the Acura Dealership in Plano TX that I knew how to tighten the gas cap 3-5 clicks. They tried replacing gas cap. Same error. Finally, they replaced a fuel sensor and I have not had problem since they replaced.
