Check Engine Light--Can I buy something to diagnose ?

I have an 04 tl with 104k on it. I just got the oil changed last week and had the 105k service done last month.
The VSA/Check engine light just came on this morning while driving to work.
The car feels a little hesitant on acceleration and sometimes when driving on the highway.
I called the dealer--they didnt seem too concerned and said to bring it in next week. I am way concerned as this is my daily driver and I also dont like that the check engine light could be one of MANY things. My dealership is ok but I geneally dont consider dealership service departments to be the most trustworthy of services.
So is ther any sensor I can buy that I can hook up myself ?
For those of you that have had this issue--what was the problem and how much did it cost to fix ?
Thanks in advance for any replies

The CEL or Check Engine Light can be caused by something as trivial as a loose gas cap, to something more, like IACV issues or EGR issues. You first should go get the code from a place like AutoZone, NAPA, or Pep Boys (who should do it for free) and go back online to google what it can be. You can also post it here and I'm sure any members can help you
