Car is shaking in the morning while engine is cold
My car seems to vibrate more in the morning then standing still. RPM's are not jumping, however feels weird. Check spark plugs and they seems to be pretty new. After it warms us everything is fine again. Any idea what it can be? Anyone has same problems. Car has around 100k miles and is 2004. Did SeaFoam and still same. Always put BP Premium. Any suggestions?

Yep, runs plain awful until it warms up. It's the TL's way of not spewing hydrocarbs even when cold. As long as it's smooth once it's warm your fine.

mine does it too, and if i take off to quick the car hesistates when i push down the throttle, as soon as its warm it runs like a dream...is it normal?

its called a rough idle peeps. My car does it too. But it seems that when I immediately put it in reverse it mostly goes away. so i dont know what that means really.. but I have a friend that has an 07, and he noticed his car doing that for the first time one day when he started his up too. i was in his car and I said oh, your car has a slight rough idle too. He said.. I've never felt that before. I said, its normal. All these cars do it. Mine does it moreso because I have a few more miles than you do. SO.. I think something is getting dirty from use, like carbon build up or something vaccum related or something with fuel or the IAC. I doubt the egr has anything to do with it because even if that system failed, the worse that can happen is a gasy smelling exhaust or bad gas mileage. It wont make it run rough. All the EGR system does is recirculate gas fumes from the exhaust for a cleaner running system and less pollution. It doesnt have anything to do with a smooth running engine.

well I just read something that say a faulty egr can act like a vaccum leak if it is stuck open and then it might cause a rough idle. So, maybe it can cause a rough idle. *shrug*

maybe. maybe not? Maybe the rpm changed, which caused the vaccum level to change and so the symptom disappears or becomes minute. But using your logic, one could reason that with a lower RPM, the misfire should be more pronounced because everyone knows that with a higher revs misfires are not felt as much by SOTP.

From what I understand and have read multiple times, the rough idle is not related to the EGR system. It is a self-induced misfire by the ECU when cold, to warm up the cats quicker so that ULEV rated emissions are reached sooner.
Mine does this too, and after about a half a minute the idle instantly smooths out.

I totally agree. Especially when you're taking colleages out to lunch. Its always an impressive startup when its cold out.
But seriously, even if its "normal". there has to be a reason why all these cars do it after so many miles. Like something is getting dirty, like carbon build up or maybe IAC system could be getting dirty with carbon? But actually, I think the IAC just controls the idle speed at startup by letting more air in. Its like an old fashion manual choke. So maybe thats not it. I may try to do some searching on the net. I also have the Helms service manual and the Helms electrical wiring guide. So maybe there are some troubleshooting techniques in there...
Plus these cars are not that old to have a sticky EGR. Thats what everyone always guesses the first sign of trouble. haha gee do ya think they can perfect the EGR valves 30 years later by not sticking? Highly unlikely its an EGR prob

Common Problem
I have had TL's my whole life. My 2001 did the exact same thing around 125K and it ran fine up till the day I sold it with 175K (not counting the two transmissions I had to replace in it's life time) I'm not a mechanic but I can tell you my car did the "morning rattle" for 50K and never gave me so much as a single problem other than oil changes. Dang I love this forum. I just bout my 07 TL-S on black Friday and didn't notice this small small vibration at idle but I guess I got it to. I'm in ga so we are still above freezing this time of year.

04+ TL will intentionally misfore to aide in the precat warmup process. It is normal and will go away once the car has warmed up. All you have to do is get in the car, start it, wait 30 second or so and then gently drive away. The car will warm up much faster that way.....
Also as your plugs get near the end of their life the idle may get a little rough due to large gap on the plugs.

yep, same here, To me, its the car waking up from a long sleep in the cold. The car warms up with no problem, usully in 2 minutes. During this cold temp, the cars feel a lot more powerful than in the summer. It likes the cold air I guess.

I just started feeling the morning shakes at 55k. It never did this before and now does every time it has sat for more than 6 hours (or so). I also think something is getting dirty or clogged.

I agree. Its an Age and a cold engine symptom.After 5 minutes or so, the rough idle goes away. I still don't knwo what it is. And I don't see a troubleshooting process in my helm's book. I have not really addressed this issue since I made the first post.
My friends 2007 didnt use to do that, but now it does too. you shoulda seen the look on his face when I pointed it out. haha poor guy
Some people say its normal, or enduced by the ecm to make the engine warm faster.. but if all that is true, then why doesnt the engine run that way from the factory, new?
besides, there is no logic to Honda building an engine with a rough idle on purpose. haha

Age = something dirty or clogged. I think cleaning the throttle body would be a good start. I just looked in my helms book, and for the air intake system, all I see listed is a IMT valve (intake manifold tuning) and MAP sensor and a IAT sensor (Intake Air temp). I dont see a IAC valve(idle air control). Maybe they eliminated it on these models.

Good to know that Im not the only one that experiences the shivering when the car is running cold... Acura said that I need to replace a motor mount because I also get a 5th gear vibration when the car is still warming up around 45mph... Wish I had the 04 its covered under the "goodwill warrenty" I think thats what its called...

I bought my '06 Acura TL blue/tan leather w/nav in Dec '09, so only had it a few months now. The very first test drive I did near the dealership the car felt rough- then after about 5 minutes the idle calmed down and you really couldn't much vibration after that.
Recently I took it to an Acura specialist here in San Francisco who did a thorough inspection of the car. He found two engine mounts that were both cracked- the front lower engine mount and the right side engine mount. Since I bought an extended warranty on parts, everything was covered. They found the power steering pump was leaking and replaced that as well as the mounts. Cost was about $1,000 overall. (I only paid my $100 warranty deductible, woop!)
When I went to pick the car back up after it was repaired, the idle was noticeably rough as I was driving back home- almost more so then before I'd dropped it off. So I called the Acura shop and they nearly demanded I bring it back so they could see what I was talking about. Sure enough they spent another hour tightening the mounts and tweaking things here and there throughout the engine...
Since then, the car still has a rough idle for maybe 3-4 minutes in the morning, but now it settles down so smoothly I find myself wondering if the car is even on half the time (when I'm stopped at a light).
I had the Acura specialist do an extensive check of the entire engine including spark plugs, etc. and he said everything was not only in perfect condition at this point, but that it was running 99.9% of Acura's specs when brand spankin new.
So- I've resolved to get over the morning rough idle. My guy says the car will run another 150,000 miles if I need it to.

Whoops, forgot to mention the mileage. It has 71,000 and I've really only had it for the last 1k... Traded in my '04 ML55 Benz SUV for this car hoping it would last longer and be more reliable... so far very impressed!
(Hating going from all wheel drive to front wheel drive but I'll get over it someday)...

change your oil and filter!
Run a Group IV or V synthetic oil and a decent filter. If 5w20 still feels rough then move up to 10w30.
