Caliper not releasing. Wheel very hot.

Hey,

I was on a hour drive until I heard a weird sound on the rear right.

The sound only happened when I coasted in town, and apply brakes.

On the highway, I can't hear anything, though.

So I pulled over and checked the rear right tire.

It was really hot. The RIM was hot. Checked all other tires, and they weren't hot.

So I noticed the brake caliper for the wheel didn't release.

I then pumped the brakes for a while, and drove off.

The wheel stopped making noises, which I thought it was over.

When I arrived at my sister's house, the wheel was still really hot.

What should I do?

I'm at my sister's place, 2 hours from where I live.

Most places are closed Sunday so I plan on going to Canadian Tire soon.

Thanks!

It's happened before to other members of this forum. Your only option really is to replace the caliper. Do you happen to have an extended warrant that covers the calipers? If not, you may be able to find a used one in good condition at a salvage yard. Or you could buy a new caliper. Either way, you're probably SOL on a Sunday. Sorry. The good news is that the rear calipers are cheaper than the front calipers...You should also have the pads and disk checked.

And I definitely wouldn't drive it home in that condition....

well certainly its worth pulling the tire and re lubricating the areas that the caliper slides on, its probobly a no lubrication issue

I went out and bought WD-40 and applied it to the caliper.

Drove it the car back to my sister's house and the wheel is not hot at all.

Pretty good.

This could be a temporary fix (or not, we'll see).

I'm still going to get a full car inspection soon.

You might be able to limp home, but definitely get it checked ASAP. If you're able to make it home, you have another option to consider: overhaul. Good luck.

wd 40 is not really a lubricant, its a water dispersant. its a temporary fix that will get you home, you need some caliper grease

When you pull the caliper see if the piston can be pushed back into the caliper easily, if so, not the piston sticking, if it is hard to move, open the bleeder then try again. If it then moves in easily internal break in the flexible brake hose, but if still hard to move inward, new or rebuilt caliper needed, unless you can rebuild the caliper yourself. If it does move easily, check the sliders, clean/lube with silicone grease.

Thanks guys.

Good news is, I'm at home now, and after the 2 hour drive, the wheel is just warming and not as hot as before.

It's still noticeably warmer than the other wheels, though, but not by much.

Would any mechanic be able to solve this or should I just drive to my local Acura dealer? (45 mins away). I have a Honda dealer like 10 minutes away, I wonder if they can do anything.

As for the suggestions, they are all great and appreciated.

I just don't think I have the time to try things out myself, and would prefer a mechanic.

My minivan is in a bodyshop right now, so the TL is my only car for the moment =(

Sure, any competent mechanic would be able to diagnose the problem, just a difference in the labor rate dependent upon the facility you choose.

Isn't the parking brake a shoe INSIDE the drum in the middle? Maybe a cable snapped, spring came off or something and it's internally rubbing causing the heat?

Not sure...Good luck man, keep us posted!

FML.

Took it to Acura dealer to get a full car inspection.

$730 CAD in total.

New caliper put in.
About $300 for parts and $345 for labour and the rest is tax.

Shit.

The car's in the body shop right now getting the dents fixed.

Hopefully it turns out good.

Glad it's fixed, but ouch $$$. Had to be done though. Did you take the old caliper with you?

Good luck with the body work.

My dad was nice enough to go, so I'll ask him when he gets back.

Wouldn't want to bother him while he's driving on the freeway.

That'd be pretty cool if he brought it back and we somehow fixed it.
I doubt he brought it back, though.

My dad's driving the minivan home and he said the bodyshop painted the van's door and rear panel really good.

I'll find out how "good" they painted it in a couple hours when he gets home, though.

Picking the car up hopefully by the end of the week.

I'm so excited, yet so nervous to see how well the bodyshop did.

Oh wow, I'm speechless.

Dad just drove the minivan home, and it looks great!

The paint matched very well.

It's dark out, and raining, but I'll see tommorow.

Kudos to the bodyshop!

$400 to buff/repaint rear quarter panel and rear sliding door.

I can run my fingers across the paint, and can tell it's not "smooth".
I guess I have to wax and polish it sometime (obviously not anytime soon).

Hope the results are as great for the TL!
