Mine broke and I just shook my head at yet another poorly designed cost cutting issue with the TL. I used heavy duty double sided tape and that held until it cracked somewhere else and then somewhere else a day later. Once it cracks its gonna keep on cracking.....add this to my randomly acting up backup passenger mirror tilting down issue, poor quality paint job (roof and hood had to be repainted for clear coat failure), multi cracked dashboard, peeling "A" symbol on steering wheel, fade spot on grey section of grill, slightly rocking on take off in driver seat, poorly designed door pull handles (feels like they will come off the door if I ever get angry and yank), and the apparently inevitable 60,000 mile transmission failure and one has to wonder why we put up with these cars. Oh yeah...they still happen to be one of the best looking cars on the road when equipped with a OEM body kit. The price you pay for good looks.
Mine broke a couple of weeks ago
I tried to cover the cup holders and only about an inch came out , oh well. The only reason I want to get it fixed is because I used to put my cellphone there and charge it at the same time, now it has to go in one of the cup holders. Not a big deal, but it doesn't bother me that much, so maybe I'll just leave it like that since apparently this is not an easy fix.
I think im going to try to pull out one of the slabs. hopefully theres enough slack that i wont have to buy a new one, then ill slap some electrical tape on the backside. I havent used mine in about 6 months since it broke, but now that im reading this i remember how convenient it was to have my phone chilling right on top of it.
Good ideas guys, and thanks jnc for providing that diagram. itll make it a lot easier to fix having a visual!
Mine broke in exact place as the pictures in the 6th post.
Just happened to my TL on Thursday.
I pulled the remainder of the cover forward, then superglued the edges of the slats at the break point and placed a 1.5 inch-long strip of packing tape (cut to slat width) across the bottom of the slats. The cover opens and closes completely without obstruction or issues.
Let's see how long this fix lasts. I really don't want to take the aluminum trim off the console to change the cupholder.

Just run the part number through a search engine-- all of the results are in the $60-$70 range; I think Bernardi was the cheapest as of yesterday.

The super gluing method fix doesn't last long at all. I did the same thing and about a week later it started splitting in other places. I don't know if the tape on the bottom will make the fix last longer, but it might.
I was uneasy about removing the aluminum trim to replace mine too, but its really not that difficult of a job. I was scared I would mess mine up, but I didn't. I didn't even have to remove it entirely, just enough to get the cup holder assembly out and replace it with the new one.

I replaced mine a few weeks ago. BIG TIP: Start removing the aluminum trim strips at the bottom by the arm rest NOT AT THE TOP by the Navi screen. You don't need to remove them completely. Use a plastic trim tool to pop the trim up carefully. Once you get about a foot disconnected, that is enough to swing slightly outward giving you access to the screws that hold the center console and cup holder in place. Those aluminum strips are soft and easily bent and replacements are like $100 each!! I found out the hard way. It is a fairly easy job but plan on about one hour for your first one. Now that I've done it, I could probably do another in 15-20 minutes.
Add a new victim to the list. Occurred this weekend. And a new 1-1/2" rip on the passenger seat just from normal use. I'll go the superglue route for the cup holder, if it keeps cracking well I'll get rid of it and keep it open.
Picked up a TL last week and I didnt see the cover on the cupholder, or even the little part where u can pull the cover forward, so I assume that it must have broken, cause I dont think it could have fallen inside something. I see you guys mention about 60 bucks to replace, and idea about how much the dealer charges to install?

I wouldn't be surprised if its $150 - $200. The dealer always overcharges for stuff like this. Its a real simple fix you can buy the part online and do it yourself. I don't have the car anymore but I still have the repair manual CD. I'll try to find it when I get home and post the instructions to replace.
Is anyone familiar with how to replace the cup holder assembly? I have the two silver plastic pieces undone and the three cup holder screws unscrewed, but the thing will assembly won't come out. It seems to be stuck. I hope I'm explaining well. Anyone found any tutorials / images / instructions on how to replace this?
You can type in any question on google, followed by...... , on ACURAZINE, and it will bring up a number of threads on the issue (question) you type in.

same thing happened to my 05 TL, seems it is a weak spot in the assembly as it literally broke in the same spot. it is #7 on the diagrams going around and you can find them for $75 or so online - they are $98 at the dealerships. i have one in hand, my only question is does anyone have instructions on how to replace it? I know pretty much I have to pry the side moldings away to access the three screws holding it down but not sure if there is a simpler and safer way so I don't accidentally crack the side moldings. thx

Xpditor, did u use plastic trim tool to pull up metal trim? And if so, what plastic trim tools do you have? I need to work on my cup holder assy and figure it's about time to get a set of plastic trim tools if I need rather than use metal trim tool as the trim pieces are very expensive. Thanks
Mine has been broken for the better part of a year... Never bothered to fix it, but since I'm already working on other issues and it seems relatively easy, I might just order the part and do this too...

Price keeps going up. It's now $126 + shipping at Del Ray Acura. I think I'll pass. My cover is almost always in the open position, anyway.
Here's another solution I came up with in case you guys are interested.
I ran the car without the cover for so long I decided to put in a light instead so that if better flows with the car at night. I didn't really like the look of the Range Rover cover and the OEM one is hard to get and/or super expensive. This is made in a way where you can go back to the cover if you want to. Unfortunately I was in R&D mode and did not take any pictures during the process but its pretty straight forward.
This is made out of two pieces. The top piece is printed in black ABS and the bottom is translucent ABS. The light used is
I connected everything to the center console light so that it turns on with the headlights/parking lights.
Here are the files if anyone is interested. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6616484
