Broke down today, transmission problem.. looking for some insight

I have a 2006 TL with an automatic trans. I have never had any issues in the past with the trans.. never a slipped gear or anything. This past month I did noticed that when I would reverse out of my driveway in the morning, the car would take a quick second or 2 to actually drive forward after I would take it out of reverse and put it into drive and I would always come to a full stop between R and D. To clarify what I was experiencing: I would back out of my drive way, stop, put the car into drive, and ease into the gas pedal. Sometimes the car would immediately move forward - other times the RPMs would increase slightly to my foot lightly tapping the gas, as if I had a clutch and I were trying to grab the gear... and then it would "catch" and move forward. I always just figured the car was cold as I usually don't let it warm up when the weather has been like it has been (never under 48 degrees, for a few more weeks atleast).

Today the car actually broke down. I was doing about 70-75 on a highway. I went to go pass a tractor-trailer and when I put my foot down, the RPMS shot up but the car never shifted (like what would happen if I had it in sport shift mode and I didn't hit +). I let off the gas completely and decided not to pass. The car drove fine after that... but I wanted to see if it would happen again, so I gave it some gas and it happened again. I immediately pulled over and checked the transfluid and it was fine. I restarted the car, put it into Drive and the car wouldn't move. Manual mode didn't work, Reverse didn't work, even the lower gear did not work. So I called AAA and had it towed to my mechanic/family friend.

I'm just looking for some insight. I am hopeful that my trans didn't go
Thank you!

Same thing happened to my car - funny that the TL was the first car that ever stranded me on the side of the road. The transmission was toast - I had to replace it with a rebuilt one. Sounds like yours is, too. Sorry.

Yup. Looks like the pump inside of the trans went and I need a new transmission. My mechanic said to get a salvage as opposed to a rebuilt.

You should lget a 06-07 accord trans... They are cheaper and more reliable.

Probably so he can charge you labor again when the salvage one goes, too.

Thats what I was concerned about but he's a family friend and he's been working on our cars for years.

I did some research and a rebuilt is only rebuilt in the sense that whatever failed is fixed, but everything else is still the same. What do you think?

Are these a direct fit? Just curious I've seen people mention these as an option before.

What's the warranty offer on either? That's what I'd look at first. Rebuilt transmissions at least are tested; most salvage ones are just pulled out of wrecked vehicles and sold as is.

Out here in Southern California, the rebuilt TL transmissions fly off the shelves - so my mechanic took my dead transmission out and the shop picked it up and left him a rebuilt one. (I'm a muscle-car fan, and this is why "matching numbers" versions are so rare.)

According to my understanding, this rebuild shop repairs all wear parts. So - the answer to your question may be "it depends who's doing the rebuilding."

Our transmissions aren't known for longevity, so replacement with a salvage version always seems like a strange plan to me.
