Brakes "stuck"
Brakes "stuck"
I just changed my rear brakes and rotors today bc the passenger side was grinding into the rotor.(i know your supposed to change your brakes before this happens.lol) now the situation.
the passenger side pads had no meat on them the rotor was destroyed. swapped everything over and now is good as new.
Now the driver side, the I took off the wheel and noticed the rotor looked pretty good. Took the caliper off next and noticed that the brake pad looked new. Still had alot of meat on it. I swapped everything over any way.
I am going to keep an eye on it to see if there braking/wearing evenly. Has any one experienced this??I dont know what the part is called but the 2 "prong" pieces on the caliper that have the rubber fitting that slide in and out felt fine on both caipers so it was not like they were jammed up.
Im going to look more into this, any help is always appreciated.

^^ first thing first, thanks!!
yes your right about the piston being the only thing that moves. Worst case, Im thinking the piston itself is jammed.
If you look at the thread below. on the top left half of the second picture, you see the rubber fitting ( the break line is right behind it)? thats what I was initially talking about. If you ever took off the caliper you would see that these pieces move as well. if you pull on it it "recoils" back.

the passenger side piston was fully exposed.(meaning it was pushed all the way out of the caliper. which is the obvious reason the brake pad had no meat left) the driver side piston was slightly exposed. I had to push it back in a hair to get it to fit onto the new calipers.

The piston and the caliper move. The caliper slides on the pins. These are usually what get frozen up.
The piston will overcome a stuck pin but it won't release so you end up with what you have here.
Hopefully you lubed the pins or you will have the same issue again.
As a point of reference, my rear brakes had almost no measurable wear at 92,000 miles. I had to shoot temps on them to make sure they were working which they were.

Ya, dealer says the same thing about keeping the caliper pins greased on the rear calipers (says it is a common issue in salty/sandy environments). They noticed a drag mark on the drivers side caliper-when I had it in for first brake fluid change (4 years). I went WTF-trying to rip me off-so they showed me. Definitely, needed grease. I will just have them check-everytime it is in for brake fluid change (1-year intervals now). Car actually gets 2 mpg better mileage on average-and it could be my imagination-actually coasts better.
