Blown Spark Plug
Blown Spark Plug
So today i got the news that a spark plug blew out and the thread has been stripped on the block. This all happend while driving on the fwy. I have owned the car for about a year and i have never touched the spark plugs. Mechanic told me depedning on the damage i have two options, helicoil or taking it to machine shop. Just wondering if anyone has an idead of the cost to get it fixed?
Thanks guys.
Thanks guys.
Actually the threads in head have been stripped, and it seems to happen quite often, or more frequently than I think it should considering the manufacturer.

Depending on what the mechanic decides to do, or what might be needed, e.g new cylinder head, or
pull head and have the threads fixed, it will be very costly.
Even a used cylinder head will run $100 and up and should be checked before installation.

To the OP...can you tell us the year of your TL and did you hear any unusual sounds for a period of time before this occurred (the plug blow out)? Also, which plug came out?
Thanks.
Thanks.
My TL is an 04, manual trani.I had a faint ticking sound that i could only here when i was passing a row cars. Sometimes i could here it, other time it was gone. I didnt ask the mechanic which plug, i am still waiting on call back from mechanic for more details on what to do next.
Maybe it would be a good idea for many of us with older, higher mileage cars to check the plug torque- after reading about your unfortunate event, I went ahead and checked my plugs' torque- all were nice and tight- the whole process took about 35 minutes.
Check your plugs!!!!!!
this problem happens on other cars as well, that uses the J-series engine.

When I had my timing belt done at Honda, they wanted $259 to replace them. In truth, I could have replaced them today when I was checking the torque, but I did it on the spur of the moment and since the car has 97K on it, they're not yet technically due to be replaced. It'll take another year or so to get to the mileage to replace them (at ~ 105K-110K with the odometer discrepancy known on Azine).
What I did notice is that this is really easy to do (the plug swap) and can likely be done in ~ 1 hour.
