Belt Whine in Wet Weather

Greetings everyone.

I've noticed that in the morning during wet weather (after a rainy night, for example), my TL-S would emit a whine from a cold start. It'd last about a minute, and the whine would go away once engine comes up to temp. I uploaded the video below:

What say AZine? Is this an issue that you've experienced before? Should I be concerned about the belt life right now?

My TL-S is a 2008, with just under 55K. Any input is appreciated.

I had the same issue. 08 with 86k. Did the TSB for the A/C compressor bolts. It helped a little but still occurred. I replaced the serpentine belt last week and it no longer squeaks during cold start-ups now

Same issue here w/ 08 @ 70k or so. Did the AC bolts TSB and replaced the belt, noise is gone. TSB 10-035: https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-2004-2008-93/3g-tl-technical-service-bulletins-tsbs-3g-garage-j-016-a-613659/

Had the same issue 08 TL. Just started hearing the belt squeal this year. Usually only happens when the car is left outside overnight during a downpour. Not too concerned, just squeals for about a minute.

That's not unusual. Moisture causes condensation on the belts and pulleys. Once the belt warms up,it's gone. As long as it doesn't do it at any other time like accelerating (which would indicate the belt is worn and slipping) you should be okay.

I had the same problems but after I replaced my serpentine belt it went away. Mines had 94,xxx and the serpentine belt was very dirty brown looking with small hair line cracks all over the side with the pulley grooves. It's an easy and fun DIY project.

Thanks, A-Zine. That's one less quirk I have to worry about!

Okay, I need to resurrect this thread...

Yes, it's been raining on-and-off for the past two days, and my TL-S developed the whine again. Except this time, it's not going away as the car warms up. It's occurring as I accelerate....

...oh. Oh. Damn.

I don't even have 57K miles on it...isn't that premature for belt wear?

Background: The TL-S has been garaged since November. I finally took her out this past week. During the winter, I never drove it out...just started her from time to time to keep thing running and fluids pumping.

A worn belt can hydroplane just like worn tires.

Its not just miles, but also time, because anytime the engine is running, the belt is wearing. So, depends upon whether you drive a lot of highway, or a lot of city (just idling along) for lower miles but more hours.

If interested in further diagnosis, try the followin link - the first part is specific to the RDX (belt removal), but the rest is a detailed description of how to examine and diagose for belt noise/ wear.

^Thanks for the tips.

So today, my TL-S exhibited different behavior. The whine was still there, but only when the engine is idling. The noise disappears when I touch the gas pedal - completely gone by 2000 RPM. (As opposed to what I described in my previous post, which there was whining when I accelerate.)

I visually inspected the belts this afternoon along with another buddy, and they looked in good condition all around. No fraying, no tearing, etc. So...

Btw, today was clear and dry. No rain whatsoever.

if your belt is new, make SURE it is the right size and that none of the pulleys are misaligned. Also check to make sure that the tensioner is in proper working order

Man, this is weird...I drove the TL today, and I noticed the whining switched AGAIN.

Idling (after the engine is warm) = totally quiet.

Accelerating = whining

I'm taking it into the dealership on Thursday. I assume this kind of stuff is covered under my warranty.

As far as I know, the belts are the original ones that the TL rolled off the factory line with.

So...can tensioners/pulleys go bad or get misaligned even if I had not driven it in months? The TL sat in my garage since November and this week was the first time I took it out.
