bad bearings?

i started this thread in the tires section https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-tires-wheels-suspension-97/new-tires-have-gotten-really-loud-733482/

i have an 04tl with 98k miles on it. new wheels and tires 2k miles ago. i started to hear a drone when driving at speeds greater then 40mph a few hundred miles ago. tech at firestone said it might be a bad bearing and i should drive the car and change lanes to see if the noise goes away. he said if the noise goes in and out when turning the wheel its NOT the bearing. it DOESNT go away when turning.

i have the extended warranty and bearings are covered so i guess ill make an appt with the dealer. what do u guys think? alignment first or just goto the dealer?

It's amazing how tires can immolate a bad wheel bearing. On one of my other cars I had Nittos and it sounded as if the right rear wheel bearing was gone. It would even change sounds as the car's weight increased and decreased over contours in the road. Tore it apart iand t was only tire drone. If you have someone with another TL switch tires, or if you can hear a particular corner that is creating noise, put the spare on and take a ride to see if it subsides.

i would put the stock wheels back on but those tires have almost 30k miles on them and they were loud when i took them off. i tried to pinpoint where the noise was coming from but i couldnt.

Only if the tires and wheels are the problem.
Guess not much difference if the stock wheels/tires also make noise.

Bearing went bad on my car at 94K on the front right it would make this howling wobble sound, pretty f'in annoying too, it was very loud. The hub bearing made most of its noise around the same speed or higher, wasn't too problematic at lower speeds, so its definitley a possibilty.

After only 2K miles, you wouldn't think it would be the tires but it could be. 3G TLs are somewhat notorious for cupping of the rear tires. I'd have them take a good look at the wear pattern on both tires to check for evidence of cupping. Also, I'd have your alignment checked. The fact that the sound doesn't go away when you swerve back and forth indicates that it's probably not a bearing. I had this happen to me on the left rear tire and it caused a loud howl at highway speeds. I thought it might be a bearing but turned out it was a cupped tire.

Your tech at Firestone is a moron. That's the exact opposite of the truth.

When you turn (slalom) left and right, the weight of the car shifts from one wheel to the other. This shifting of weight changes the load on the bearings. If you turn right, the left bearing takes more load. If you turn left, the right bearing takes more load. This is how you can tell which side the problem is on.

Once you determine which side the problem is on, you then have to rule out the possibility of a chopped or cupped tire. If they look good, then you know its the bearing.

Post back when you've found and fixed the problem.

Edit: Forgot to mention... If your tires are chopped or cupped, you could have a bad strut or control arm bushing.

im going to have an alignment first and have the tires checked for even tread wear. if that doesnt help, ill bring it to the dealer since it might be covered under the extended warranty..thanks all

i guess i wasnt turning the wheel hard enough to hear a change in the noise. i was doing about 50 mph and i swerved back and forth a few times. when turning to the right, there is no noise. turning to the left, the noise is there. so that means a bad right wheel bearing correct? anyway to figure out if its the front or rear?

I have this exact noise.

Anything over 40mph, my car makes a "rolling" humming sound on the front right.

The noise is worst when the car has only been running 10 minutes, taking a gradual left turn at 50mph .. it's even noticable with music going.

ive read that a way to check for a bad bearing is to jack the car up and try to shake each wheel to see if there is any play in the wheel. i did that and there was no movement in any of the wheels

Update

brought the car to the dealer and they confirmed it was bad right front wheel bearing like we thought. they also replaced the side and front engine mount. all covered under the extended warranty.

BUT GUESS WHAT...the noise is still there. they even rotated the right front tire with the right rear tire to see if it was the tire and that didnt help. service advisor told me they still hear the noise as well. i did some turning at higher speeds and the noise still goes away when i turn to the right putting the load on the left side. what gives here? exact same noise with a new bearing. bad rear bearing? 2 bad tires on the right side of the car? help me out here fellas

Could be bad tires, even though they are new. What brand?

went to the dealer to today and they are replacing the the right rear bearing. the part had to be ordered so they told me in 4 days the part should be in.

acura of wantagh is definitely doing the right thing by me. my car has 99450 miles on her with the extended warranty and they are determined to fix the noise. the service adviser told me they will continue to troubleshoot the problem even if the new rear bearing doesnt fix the problem

ill check back after the rear bearing gets installed
