5AT or 6M?

Otherwise, maybe the infamous heat shield adjustment problem.

Good guess; worth checking.

I think they are talking about the heat shield over the cat.

Great! Glad you found it.

Motor Mounts seem to be a typical failure on the both the 2nd and 3rd Gen TL's.

Did the dealership find this out for you? I'm assuming it would be covered under warranty if still applicable.

Motor mounts:
The motor mounts on the 3G tl sort of fail early, there is a fluid filled one that may leak and then deteriorate, and then there are the other two which may snap due to excessive torquing of the motor.

Heat-shield
Sheilds heat from the cabin from the exhaust, a loose one will cause some noise.

There is actually a TSB for one of the Heat Sheilds.

Check TSB 07-026 here:

2 of the motoer mounts on my '02 TL-S were identified as needing replacement at ~65,000 miles. No idea how long they may have been broke. New mounts made a BIG difference in feel under acceleration - much more solid.

my 01 needed the front motor mount at 68k miles
They are often found broken along with passenger side mount, with the transmission failure around that mileage.
Really easy to replace the front mount with the trans already removed!

Many things people think are trans prob are really motor mounts.
The special fluid filled ones for front and rear motor are especially prone- but help keep the car so smooth.
Some early years had a vacuum assist to the mounts- so when you got on the throttle hard the motor mounts tighten up!
When one gets a leak- a slight engine miss from the vac leak occurs--very hard to track down

I was going to say motor mounts. That's classic, one direction it gets better and one it gets worse. Mine is starting to get slightly more vibration when I back up every morning and the engine is cold. Might be time to replace them.

I get the same thing, didn't think it was the motor mounts until reading this thread. Looks like I better get those aftermarket motor mounts in the future
