Acura quoted $780

So today I just called my Acura dealer to ask how much it cost to replace my brakes because it's been squeaking for about 2 weeks. Guy from the service said $780. My car has 46,785 miles on it. I bought it brand new. I drive in and out of Chicago. The rotors on the car is still fine. All i have to do is just replace the brake pads right? You think it's a good deal to go to Acura and pay the $780 or just have my uncle who's a mechanic for Honda and replace the pads himself for free?

$780 for a Brake Job is Nuts. To replace the rotors and pads is $240 at the dealer here in Atlanta. If all you need is pads, that should cost you no more than $150.00 for front and rear at a retail shop.
If my uncle worked at Honda as a mechanic he would get ALL my business.

$780 is ridiculous. That's gotta be 4 NEW rotors, Pads, Labor, etc. A full brake replacement.

You can get After Market for less with improved performance.

Uncle's a mechanic at Honda? What AcuraVic said - why isn't he getting all your business?

Well my uncle just told me to buy the pads. I went online and checked Tirerack.com. The Akebono ProACT Ceramic Pads looks good to me, but the only thing is that they only sell the front pads but no rears. Anyone know any good sites to buy some pads?

When you CALL for an estimate saying "My brakes have been squeeling for 2 weeks"
they have to assume it needs everything replaced, rotors&pads
AT 46k your rotors are perfect?
Wow!!!-

as determined by who exactly? and what method of measurements?
Stop and go driving eats brakes and warps rotors easily

No shop can give an accurate estimate without inspecting the car

New Brake Pads

I have a 04 TL and have all of my work done at a Honda dealer. Less cost, less wait, better service. If your uncle can do it, do it!!!

Look at my avatar.

I have my front and rear brakes rotors and pads replaced. Cost me about $700 bucks. I love the cross drilled and ceramic pads that I have now.

It's Rotora. I got them from Excellerate who is an official vendor here in Azine. Look him up.

Just to clarify I included the installation cost to the 700 bucks I mentioned above. The complete rotors set front and back plus ceramic pads cost me about 550. Depending where you live the shipping cost might go up or down. Excellerate or Josh is in CT.

Cost of Brake Job

I just called local Acura Dealer to get my brake pads replaced $184 for front OR rear. If they cut the rotors, it's $260 for front OR rear. In other words, full brake job is $520. This is on an 04 TL (automatic)

Dont believe quotes on the phone EVER- that gets you in the shop- then more issues are found- like your rotors wont turn and still be thick enough, so you need new dealer provided rotors- just ask them how much that up$$$$ the deal

Try www.rockauto.com.

Centric Ceramic (Part number begins with 105) is pretty good for a very low price. They sell the Akebonos as well. Be sure to bed-in the pads.

I had about the same miles maybe a bit more and also needed brakes. Was at the dealer for something else and asked. Quoted over 800. I think maybe 850. Told him I would do it in a couple weeks when I get back from vacation. This was for pads and resurface ONLY. I am pretty sure I got it as written quote but, not 100% sure.

Anyway I ended up getting them done by my brothers friend who runs an autorepair shop. He did new rotars AND pads all the around for $450. Said he would normally charge about $550 but, since he knew my brother. He said the rotars were a bit more expensive then other cars but, not too bad. I have a 04 TL Auto.

All the local places wanted 400-500 for pads and resurfacing. So no matter what do it elsewhere for cheaper.

Kind of funny but, last few new cars Honda or Acura the service departments have left bitter tastes in my mouth with their overcharging. As well as inspections plus oil changs that add up to $100+ services.

Kind of makes me not want to go back there when it comes time to buy a new car. One Honda's service department infact pissed me off so much I did NOT go back when it came time to get a new Honda.

Wonder if that ever goes into their thinking? Maybe not screwing the customer over on service will get you repeat business?

But, I guess all the dealships no matter the make are probably the same. Just seems to me fair prices at the service department would make for more loyal customers? I mean you deal with the sales department what a week or so? After that all your dealings are in the service department.

I just got back from Acura Dealer. Failed Inspection for front brakes as I suspected. I was hearing the wear indicators. Front Pads replaced with labor $171. I passed on cutting the rotors (although he wanted to do it). So far, no shimming or vibration. Overall it was a good experience- no pressure. He even quoted me aftermarket rotor prices in case i wanted to go that route ($60 for new front aftermarket rotors) instead of cutting them

when the scarred old rotors eat your new pads- then you can re-evaluate the decision to save a few bucks now, and report back here- please

I hope you're being sarcastic.

Why don't you do your own brakes?

As long as the grooves did not exceed a certain depth, the runout was within spec, and the DTV was within spec, the factory service manual states that it is correct to simply replace the pads and shims and not touch the rotors. GM, Toyota, Nissan and BMW all state the same thing.

Price definitely sounds high, but I am new to Acura so I don't know from experience.

My dealer gives free oil changes so I am hoping they don't try to hustle me every time for other services, which is probably their overall bait and switch plan.

46K and good pads is NOT unusual. I have 45K miles on mine as well (auto tranny) and was told by Acura during my last (before warranty expiration) that I stil had about 60% of my pads left...no need to replace.

To the original poster... If you ALREADY have squeak, why (ON EARTH) would you EVER consider ceramic replacements? Maybe you don't realize it but certain materials have a tendency to be noisier/squeeker than others. Ceramics are one of those. The harder the material, the more likely you will have brake noise. Metal-composite pads are the same way.

There are many aftermarket pads available for the Brembos. Wagner ThermoQuiet, Raybestos Professional Grade Semi-Metallic and Centric Posi-Quiet Semi-Metallic all have part numbers available for the Brembos and they cost between $35-$40 for the front set.

Acura of Brookfield quoted me $275 for rear brake pad replacement and resurface rotors, and $410 for front brembo brake pad replacement and resurface rotors. Labor included obviously.

I have an '04 6MT with roughly 47,200k miles on it. Seems early for brake pads to be replaced, or am I off base here? My dad has a '05 5AT with roughly 67,000 miles - no brake issues yet.
