6 speed Trans

I have read the threads on the 6-MT but my 2007 TL-S has been in the shop 4 weeks to fix the 3rd gear. At first they replaced the 3rd gear, then 4th and clutch before trying to return it to me. When I picked it up it took 3 tries to get into 1st gear and 2nd would not engage without grinding or forcing it. So...Now they are working on the flywheel and something else. The dealership claims that auto's get a whole new transmission under warrenty but for 6-MT they have to try to repair it according to Acura. I am the first manual the Louisville dealership has worked on and the Lexington dealership said they have not worked on any.

I hope that my awesome car is not the dealers science project. Comments.

There's a special tool used to install the pressure plate to the flywheel.
Sounds like they didn't use it, or at least didn't use it properly.

there is a prob with the 6speeds that acura has not figured out the exact cause or cure- so they are doing repairs in person at the dealer level- rather than dropping in a fully rebuilt replacement transmision
Plus most techs can handle a manual trans overhaul as needed- less complex than the automatics
See other threads
they are trying 3rd gear sets and other parts on that car!

Good luck with the dealership getting the repair done correctly. You mentioned they haven't worked on any manual transmissions before, so you are their lucky first one.

You might want to consider the lemon law if you don't get your car repaired to satisfaction.

Thanks for the posts. An update..the dealership is lending us a vehicle for spring break trip since they now have found a bent lubrication tube to the trans(I think I saw that on some posts as a problem spot?)

I would accept nothing less than a new transmission. Escalate up the chain to a regional service rep and demand a new tranny. You can easily make the point that these wrench monkeys have no idea what they are doing because they never work on 6MT TL's. They even admitted as much.

First thing you do after you get that new tranny is take it home drain the POS Honda MTF out of the case and refill with GM Synchromesh FM. You do this because (a) the new tranny will still have problems with 3rd gear, (b) Honda won't step up and fix it and (c) the GM fluid solves it no problem.

I have 40K miles on my car since changing the fluid and have never had a problem with 3rd since.

PS: I have a background in mechanical engineering and used to work for one of the big three. I know how car companies handle warranty work. Squeaky wheel always gets the grease. Bitch, moan, complain enough and they will give you the new tranny.

I agree it is time for a new tranny.

I disagree with the second point. The 3rd gear problem, though common, is not an issue on the majority of cars. It is not necessary to change out the fluid if the tranny works fine.

i have an 07 type-s 6 speed... occasionally i have a problem with the 3rd gear... and from just a perspective i believe it's at a certain lower RPM that i have the problem... when i shift from a high RPM i don't have the problem at all...

it also helped to completely step on the clutch all the way down, shift until it pops into gear, then release the clutch and hit the gas... slowly and smoothly...

Saw this on the 8thCIvic, I would think Acura would follow suit...

I dare you to walk up to the technician that works on your car and call him a wrench monkey to his face. Report your results here.

An update: The dealership put it back together again and it still had problems going into gear. So, after 5 or 6 weeks, I have lost track, Acura has approved a new transmission.

well it looks like I am joining you on the manual transmission repair project car list.

My clutch has failed at 7500 miles so I take the car in expecting them to say you have to pay for clutch. Well I am very happy with the service and I got a call back telling me they are ordering the parts for third gear and the clutch and will keep me posted. Its a couple days just to get the parts so well see. I dont think I will have the same problem you had with respect to their experience, its a huge dealership.

I actually have to call the guy back I want to find out if the dealership will remove the one-way delay valve that could also be causing some of the problems with the transmission.
