90k miles loud engine?
http://www.youtube.com/user/CKDC8#p/a/u/0/KDQxvIt-6PE It helps if you use headphones to listen to it.
I have an 04 automatic TL, 90k miles...The past 6 months i have noticed 50% of the time when i start the car, usually when it hasnt been driving in 12+ hours, it starts very loud. And when you go outside by the hood to listen to it, it just sounds like a knocking sound or almost a diesel engine!. After about 5,10 minutes it quits down. But i want to make sure this isnt a serious problem! A mechanic (mom and pop place) told me hondas tend to be loud after some time and an oil additive helps but he said the sound is a characteristic of a lot of hondas and acuras.
Has anyone else had this sound?

turn car on. now listen, turn a/c on (make sure compressor is engaged) listen, now turn a/c off and listen. does the sound go/come with compressor engagement?
reason i focused on the compressor is i noticed you mentioned the noise gose away after a few minutes.

We have a noisy valve train.
its especially audible in the mornings when started cold.
what you hear is the taptaptaptaptap or clackclackclack of the valves.
the car is designed to do this cold, to more efficiently warm up the car.
my '06 with 40,000 makes the same noise in your video on cold start ups.
with 105k miles approaching, you're due for a timing belt and a valve adjustment.

It's not normal. Your car didn't make said sound until now. Whether or not its something serious, I'm not sure. What I do know is that I'd be driving to the dealer if my car made that sound.
Yeah, I'd have to say it's normal for a J-series TL engine.
However, it's possible (but not likely) that your valves have loosened enough to cause noise. In that case, a valve adjustment would make a difference.
For me, a valve adjustment did not make a difference, but my valves were not loose enough to be causing noise.
