2nd and 3rd gear synchronizer replace

Hi there, has anybody done the 2nd and 3rd gear synchronizer replace on an 07 tl-s. reason I ask is I'm having trouble shifting from 1st to 2nd and 3rd, even with the replacement of the fluid with GMSFM, it doesn't happen all the time, the dealer is willing to do the job under warranty, just curious what the expert in this forum think about this. thanks

I wouldn't do it. I'd change the fluid to the miracle-working GM fluid. Several members have reported more problems, i.e., not being able to engage reverse, after having the stealer tear apart their tranny.

But the GM fluid? 100% success rate. 100%.

OP said he already replaced it with the GM fluid. May need to lower that to 99.9 %

Thanks, Bearcat!

So I'm fairly mechanically inclined. Was going to change my oil, PS fluid, and the tranny fluid this week. Any tips on how to change the tranny fluid? I don't have an owner’s manual (yet). Is there any special tool I need (i.e.: fluid pump)?

Thanks!

Also, if you're having trouble with that many gears it might be time to look at the pilot bearing. Does the car shift fine with the engine off?

Could be but not that likely. Does it get better or go away after being driven for a while? Still leaning toward the pilot bearing.

if it was the tranny. I presume they'd just replace it with a "remanufactored one" vs tearing it down?

I don't drive it long enough to notice the difference, I only drive the car to and from work which is 20 minutes maximum each way, some days it's ok smooth all the way even on cold days then sometimes it just catches the gears on second and little bit on third, I took it to the dealer last saturday, they took it for a drive and the guy said he did not see anything wrong with it but base on my complaints they will do the work base on the service bulletin which is changing the second and third gear synchronizer also they will change the clutch for me if I want to (just pay the parts) since they're taking down the transmission. Since I still have until the end of this year to decide (warranty) they will keep my case open and if I decided to have it done just give them a call.

That sounds like the way to go. You might never find out what was causing the issue but you'll have it fixed and a new clutch for $250. The great thing is if I'm right and it's the pilot bearing, it's not going to be covered so you might come out ahead on this deal.

Right. A failing pilot bearing can cause vibrations, difficulty in completing shifts, increased wear on synchronizers, damaged blocker rings, and be noisy.

As a rule of thumb, the release and pilot bearings should always be replaced when doing a clutch replacement job. These parts are not expensive at all and are wear items. By not advising the customer that these parts should be replaced, a shop is not doing a complete clutch replacement and not serving the best interests of that customer in my opinion.

Well, I replaced mine with the GM stuff. So far, no more popping out of 3rd. Only put about 20 miles on it since I replaced the fluid but it used to do it once every 2-5 miles before so I think that's a good sign.

There's only a TSB for 3rd gear rough engagement/popouts and requires the replacement of the 3rd/4th gearset. Are they going to replace both gearsets (1st/2nd & 3rd/4th)?
