2007 TL Type S Cold Engine Noise
2007 TL Type S Cold Engine Noise
Hey guys,
I wonder if you can identify source of this engine noise.
(link listed below for online mp3 file playback)
It is noticeable only when engine is below 50 degrees F and disappears around 2-3 minutes. For some quite time I cannot identify it where it comes from. Sound file is taken from left side, then minute later from front of the engine and then right side. It ends at proximity of left wheel well. It is all around 3 minutes.
I appreciate your thoughts

Yeah... woah. That doesn't sound good.
When you rev the engine, does the sound change with the revs? There's nothing broken thats leaning against the motor and vibrating, right (that wouldn't go away ever, though, so thats probably not it).
I'd definitely start with the tensioners. Doubt its a waterpump issue, as it wouldn't make that big of a noise at all.
EDIT: didn't listen through the whole clip... it does change with revs, but it sounds like the motor itself is fine. Definitely think its a pulley or a tensioner.

The timing belt tensioner is rattling. When the engine warms up and the hydraulic fluid inside the tensioner warms up then the noise goes away. If your timing belt has not been replaced, now would be a good time to replace it along with the tensioner. Otherwise you can just replaced the tensioner by itself.

If so, was a factory or aftermarket part used?
I have seen aftermarket tensioners fail, but even a new "honda" tensioner can go bad. I have replaced a few on "new" engines with under 5,000 miles. it is rare for one to completely fail and cause the belt to jump, but it can happen. That is why we always recommend replacing the tensioner when the timing belt is replaced.
Not sure if they replaced it or not. I do remember that they said something looked in good condition and didn't need to be replaced, just not sure what part exactly. Guess I'll have to call tomorrow or Monday and see what they say.
Thanks guys - sharing the experienced ear is priceless. I was afraid I hear that this noise is timing belt related but hoped for less of surgery with serpentine belt rollers. (-;
Since the timing belt tensioner causes this noise the water pump goes goodbye anyways as well TB tensioner replacement which I find very risky to leave unchanged with this much of work to redo it all later just to change the socker. So here comes my next weekend project and whole bunch of cash. Man again before Christmas !
I agree with Fourdcourier72 - the tensioner being left there old would be probably a mistake. I just wasn't sure if TB tensioner might go bad with 67 k miles on it (when I started hearing it). Well, now with 75 k on it I'll feel less guilty about replacing the whole full kit .. LOL
Do you guys know any specific aftermarket brand or everyone these days thinks going OE stuff is only one way to go with timing drive belts parts ?
I appreciate your help guys -

Hey Guys
I just want to share with you the final notes on this problem.
I took longer Saturday to knock this out. Got all the parts from mixed sources at reasonable pricing. The TB kit including water pump as well as serpentine belt tensioner and pulleys. All stuff I bought is OE.
Total parts were about $ 320.00.
The cold engine noise came from TB guide pulley being loose in combination with TB hydraulic pulley leaking its oil slowly.
After replacement of it all it now runs nice and quiet. All took about 7 hours. Let's hope it will last another 75 k.
Again, thank you all for sharing your ear and prior experience.
Take care -
