Question 2006 MT Clutch Slipping?

2006 6 speed MT. In 5th or 6th, steeping on the gas pedal causes an immediate increase in RPM but not speed. Then RPM drops to match speed and car accelerates. Sounds like the first signs of a clutch slipping?

yup, clutches tend to slip in higher gears first.

then your lower gears will start to slip, soon.

Thank you. the dealer is trying to tell me I need a $120 diagnostic first. etc. Claiming clutch and flywheel cost of over $3100.I am thinking clutch only.

there are real world test; most of them destroy your clutch tho.

the real indicator is that your RPMS go up but not speed.
that is the sign of a slipping clutch.

LUK makes the stock clutch.
you can find the stock clutch for 100 dollars or a little less.
try rockauto.com or ebay.

fly wheel is a little bit more pricey from those same sources I gave you, but still will be cheaper than the dealer.

then you will need an independent shop to help you install your clutch kit.

a shop did it for me for $400 + cost of clutch kit.
at the time, I didnt know about ebay or rockauto...and ended up paying 350 for the stock clutch kit at acuraoemparts.com

however; it is significantly cheaper if you source the LUK clutch kit from somewhere else.

Update - Dealer came down to $2474 including 8% sales tax. So it took some work but worked out.

yeah ive been quoted atleast $500 independent shop to replace it. It is a lot of labor to have to drop the front subframe.

Thanks - would rather the dealer be responsible for it. Issues and they will have to fix it. And I don't have a trusted local/independent mechanic to use. I do just about everything else that I can myself.

$2500 still seems very pricey for a clutch/PP replacement. Even if they are charging list price for parts it sounds like a $1500 labor cost. A good indy will do that for a fraction.

If you are set on using a dealer, next time you might want to try a Honda dealer vs Acura

Also, consider upgrading the front lower sway bar while you have the subframe out...maybe the lower control arm bushings...make a list of all the stuff that won't add barely any labor while it's out.

So you're going to give your money to a place that was obviously trying to steal over $600 from you initially? And now you think you're getting a great deal at $2474?

Dealership mind-fucking at its best.

Didn't sound like the OP had too much in the way of options. Prefers a dealer and doesn't have a trusted mechanic.................

There are some of us that prefer dealer maintenance, don't have the option to work on it ourselves, or do not want to be without a functional vehicle while it is being repaired. Dealers are pricey, but not all independent shops are honest nor are they always cheaper.

Me? I prefer dealer maintenance...although I try to take it to Honda instead of Acura for pricing as well as convenience since the Honda dealer is less than 5 miles from my house. It is also nice to just walk in, drop my keys, grab a key to the loaner, and leave. There is a price to pay for convenience. Just a matter of being aware of that cost and accepting it.
