1st to 2nd gear shifts automatically (04 TL)

Hey guys,
I recently met up with another TL owner and i noticed that when he would put his TL into Sport Shift, he would have complete control over first gear. (as in being able too switch to second when he wanted too) On my 04 base TL, when i am in sports mode, the transmission switches gears automatically from 1st too 2nd (after that i have complete control through 5th). I was wondering if that was normal and if it is, is there a way too modify it so it doesn't switch automatically. Thanks

the only TL I think that was able to do that was the '99 TL .. with the 4AT... each TL after that with the 5AT would automatically shift you out of 1st and not just at redline... the only way to hold it is to drop the shift into "L" or "D1" (if a prev gen TL).

Dunno if you're talking about the '09 TL... can't speak for that.

No way to modify this for your gen TL... just just "L" and shift up when you want to to Drive and then shift into SS and you've got control again.. easy enough

in our 04 tl's L is an alternative to control over 1 switching to 2 automatically.

I thought 07-08 TLs can hold 1st gear... not relevant but I thought my loaner TL could do this.

This subject has come up a bunch of times, but how it goes is that 04-06's cannot use SportShift to stay in first, while 07-08 base/type-s CAN. This is due to a difference in the trannys firmware profile. Nothing you can do about it if you dont own a 07-08.

Got you...I'm going to try it that way then. But if i use that technique once in a while would it effect my tranny in any way?

I like the way you explained it but i don't like the answer... because mine is an 04 base. So i guess ill do what the other guys said and use "L" from time to time and see how that works out. I also heard though, that in the 07-08 models where you do have control over 1st, you dont have control over higher gears? Is that true?

in 2004-2006, 1->2 is automatic, then you can control the rest. in 2007-2008, you can control all gears.

Just remember, the TL's tranny is fragile. If control was NOT given to the driver to control 1->2, then figure there's a reason behind that. And logically, there is a great deal of torque running through that tranny in 1st gear, so cruising around in 1st and then stomping on the gas definitely feels pretty cool, especially in VTEC country, but it ain't good for the engine.

Once in a while? I guess, so long as that "once in a while" isn't the one time it messes with the tranny.

all of the TL/CL cars with the 5at up to and including 06 cars auto shift from 1-2 and will automatically move you up to the next gear if you hit the rev limiter 2x in the current gear

I dont think we were disagreeing sir . Perhaps you are just adding extra information regarding the 2x rev limiter to share your further knowledge about the other gears.

I tried it in "L" yesterday and I could feel the torque when i stepped on it. (i almost dropped my slurpee ) but i think ill stick too sports shift without bringing it down too save my tranny from any problems.

One issue that i did have was when it was time to take it from "L" to "D" i would accidentally do into "N" since it doesn't take much for the shifter too switch. Now that...can really do damage

what i've done to counter that shift into neutral is .. drop into L.... and when i'm ready to shift into 2nd gear, I lean my hand to the left as i shift up a little... this way, it favors "D" and then even goes into SS since i'm putting all my pressure to the left...
