'07 Load ping (knocking) problems
OK guys...time to see if anyone else has had the not-so-pleasureful experience that I have over the past few months. It all began last year toward the end of the summer (about 4 months after I moved out to TX from NC) when I began to hear a knocking sound coming from the engine area. It only comes about when you are slightly on the throttle accelerating (around 3k RMP is best...and around the shift point between 1st and 2nd). I really didn't think too much of it and just kinda dealt with it, but I just kept noticing it and finally in December I took her in to the local Acura dealership for a little examination. Turns out they ended up keeping her for a WEEK (I did get to have fun in the loaner RDX though) and after replacing my Cat and a few other exhaust components ($1600 warranty claim!) I finally got her back....but the noise was STILL there!!!!!
It's sounds very similar to an engine knock (which they swore at the time it wasn't an engine knock) as it speeds up with the RPMs, and after you go past 25mph or so you don't hear it any more (road noise overrides it I'm sure). They told me to switch gas brands...so I went to Chevron....and dealt with it again up until last week. I finally took it back to the dealership and complained again and this is when the head service technician dude rode with me. He said that they have heard of this before and that it is something dealing with load pinging due to the low-premium octane gas (also the oxygenated gas we have here in El Paso during the winter) and that there was nothing I could do....ARGH.... It is somewhat strange that the highest octane premium gas I've seen out here is 91 and back in NC I could get 93 octane....
Thoughts? Comments? Anything?
Thanks!!!

There is a very long thread on a problem with virtually identical symptoms. Look in this section for the "Valve Chatter" thread.
The biggest difference is most of the cars in that thread (at least 50 members) is that they are all TL-S's.

Hmm...ill have to search that up when I get to work today. It's more than annoying at times too...
I didn't happen to ask the service manager what types of TLs were having the same issues as mine, but he did say that it was a known problem and he has definitely seen/heard it before.

I had a similar problem in my Integra and the dealership gave me the same line so I started using 93 octane instead of 87 and it didn't fix it all the way but when I added octane booster that seemed to do the trick. Theoretically if it is an octane problem then octane booster should fix it.

This car calls for 91 Octane. A lot of us run 93 because that's what Premium is in our area. So we've already got a 2 point "boost" in Octane.
Ocatne Boosters are OUTRAGIOUSLY more expensive than gasoline - depending on the brand $30 to $80 PER GALLON. WTF??

You're better off running/mixing 100 Octane Unleaded Race Gas at $5 - $6 per Gallon.
Further the addition of Octane Booster will only result in a small increase in Octane - a point or 2 at most.
One member did an experiment and figured he need to get to ~95 or ~97 Octane to eliminate the knocking in his TL. That's a 4 - 6 point boost over the recommended 91 Ocatane gas. You will NEVER get there with a conventional Octane Booster.

Once again, the dealer trying to deny the problem. It makes me so mad knowing all they have to do is plug their scanner into it, drive it, and look at the scanner to show if it has knock or not. And still somehow they don't "think" it's knock but they don't know for sure. It took me less than one minute to plug the scanner in, drive my car, see that I was getting knock retard, and unplug it.
I think a mod needs to change the title of the "Valve Chatter" thread to something more appropriate since it's misleading and people with the knock problem seem to miss it.
