'07-'08 Ballast
'07-'08 Ballast
I'm currently doing an 08 front end conversion for my car. I already bought the headlights but they didn't come with the ballasts. From what I've read before, the 05 ballasts won't work. Can I buy an aftermarket ballast (i.e. DDMTuning) to use with these headlights? I'm not sure if the plug is the same.
If I do go with an aftermarket ballast. Can I use a 55w ballast? Or will I risk melting the housing?
Thanks!

the ballasts will all work if you wire it right. remember there is only a positive and negative wire, both being 12v sources, so any competent car electrician can do it right.
yes the ddm ballasts will work but you will need the d2s converter for ballasts. also, keep in mind that once you put the d2s converter, the back of the cover for the bulb may NOT close properly, giving it an improper seal and condensation may form
55w should work no problems, the heat is only an issue for foglights and cheap projectors(tl projectors arent cheap)

I came across this link on another thread:

Looks like the igniter is hardwired into the ballast. I guess I'm going to have to cut the ignitor and wire it to the aftermarket ballast. Shouldn't be too hard.
make sure you solder your connections and shrink wrap them. for connections to a ballast that produces a lot of current during startup, it would be fatal to have a loose connection.
+1 on making sure you solder the connection and ensure it is well insulated. It is very easy for the current to arc as it did on a Philips kit I had a while back when aftermarket kits first came out.

The only probelm I see is getting them to mount securely to the bottom of the headlight. I'm not sure of the dimensions of the ballast.
You may or may not need to pick these up also. Not thinking very clearly this morning lol.

I've been thinking this for my headlights, switching to Morimotos five5 system.

I've talked to Matt (Owner of TRS) and he said I'd be fine running these inside the TL projectors, this is what he told me
not sure of the 04-06 projectors though because the way they chromed the bowls.

The TL projectors could certainly handle the 50w ballasts since they only run a bit hotter, but the TL projectors are big enough to handle/disperse the added heat. Overall though the biggest downside is the fact that the ballasts wont mount as cleanly to the bottom side of the housings.
