05 TL start noise

My starter makes a lot of cranking noise. It turns fast but the sound it makes it louder than my friends 07.

Are there shims that go on the starters? And can starters make a lot of cranking noise on these TL's when they show age and wear and tear?

Also, just as the engine starts, It starts to fire and I feel a thud! Like the engine is jumping off the mount and then comes back down as it starts and Thud! Is that a bad motor mount?

Chad

check your motor mounts, also how many miles on the TL? Sparks start to wear out around 60K, they can last till 100, but become less efficient over time.

the starter could be shot i had it replaced twice at the dealer. and that thud could be a bad mount the side mounts u can tell easily youd see it bleeding fluid....the rear n front u need to power brake it in drive n reverse. if the engine shifts like nuts in reverse its the front mount if it shifts forward in drive its the rear.....if in both diorections then its both and most likely the side is blown too......... i recommend innovative mounts to everyone over the stock mounts.

You sound like you have hit it right on the head. But hopefully there is no more than one motor mount that is bad. But I didn't know there is fluid inside the motor mounts. So I wonder if mounts are covered under warranty? I have 44k miles.. Also another topic, do you think it would be a good idea to let the dealer do a transmission service on it? Like if anything goes bad, then they can fix it themselves and plus its getting close to going out of warranty so I am thinking I may want to have the transmission serviced now, just incase it screws up it will have time to do it before 50k miles. Or is the drive transmission covered for longer than 50k on a 2005?

Honda's/Acura's model year 2000+ have Iridium spark plugs. BMW, Mercedes, Volvo, etc. All the major import brands use them in their cars for 100k+ mile no tune up intervals. They will be fine after 60k miles, and still ok at 100k miles. Though they should be replaced by 105k miles. Hopefully when people start doing these replacements they will use iridium replacements and not lower grade plat. plugs which will only last 30-60k miles.

My 05 TL is the same way. Sometimes it doesn't even turn over until the second try. I would argue the battery is probably the culprit, and I should look into replacing it soon. The starters on Hondas typically make bad screeching and grinding noises when they go out, and usually its an all of a sudden kind of thing. Mine has been like this since I got it at 44k miles. Now I'm at 72k miles.

Oh boy. I think I am in the same boat as well. I have about 74k on my '04 5AT and I've had the "thud" sound and knock sensation transmit through the steering column when I start the engine in the morning.

I also feel a thud in the steer wheel when I come to a full moderately hard stop. Feels like the engine is "loose" and banging into something close to the steering column or rack. I can also get one of these thumps in the wheel when I accelerate moderately from a stop once in a while, again like the engine isn't tightly seated on its mounts.

A few years back, I told this to the dealer and they said I had good "vacuum" to my fluid motor mounts. Now my car is out of warrantee. Is there any danger to driving around with worn or bad engine mounts?

Thanks guys.
