Talking '05 TL Check engine light code O2 Sensor

My check engine light came on yesterday. I took it to a local auto store they pulled the code saying I had to replace one of my O2 sensor. I wanted to see if anyone else had this problem and if there was anything else that it could be. I was told it is the #1 sensor which is the one before the catalytic converter.

Some history: I had my cabin air filter, engine air filter and my air intake tube replaced on sat. I'm not sure if any of this has to do with the above.

I’m going to play the “I’m a girl and need some help card.”

Hey Jen!
is it possible for you to go back and get the exact code?
that would tell us a lot and while I believe you, I just want to make sure the auto store reps told you the correct 02 sensor to replace.

as of recent, a lot of TL's with that code has been popping up!
which makes sense, 02 sensors can get lazy!
or the catalytic converter may be on its way out at 100+ thousand miles.

Welcome to AZ! Lol @ your sig.

It's what Justin said. The exact code will help us confirm it for you. Also very important to note: just because there is a lean/rich code or O2 sensor circuit code doesn't automatically fault the sensor. These auto parts stores had a tendency to blame the sensor right away and try to sell you one without properly diagnosing the problem so always take their advice with a grain of salt. The exact code(s) is the best starting point.

Thanks!

I have the code it is P2254. This is the code that came up yesterday.

Today it was followed by code 25-1 and 61-1.

My car currently has 89,500 miles.

I took it to 2 different stores and I was not sold anything they told me to take it to the Acura Dealer here in WI.

Woot! Milwaukee! I went to MSOE. I'm heading up there this weekend too.

Bank 2 sensor 1 open circuit on O2 sensor. If I'm not mistaken, bank 2 is the front bank near the radiator and sensor 1 is the top sensor. Literally the easiest one to replace. It should also be fairly easy to inspect the wires to make sure that isn't the issue.

I'm not sure about the other codes though. I also hope that a 2nd person can confirm my conclusion about which sensor this is referring to.

p2254 is bank 2 sensor 1!

whats odd is that its throwing the light for p2251 which is bank 1 sensor 1.

is it plausible for 2 sensors to go out at the same time!?

What kind of gas are you using, Jen?

The J series engine in the TL is a high compression engine that is tuned to run on premium (91+ octane). If you run anything less, you will immediately notice less power and will eventually suffer from performance problems. Definitely always run top-tier premium unless you're in bumbleflip and a lower grade fuel is all that's available.

Edit: also, your assessment is correct. It's probably not going to fix your problem, but definitely lowers the risk of any other issues down the road. Also, this may have not been the cause of your problem either, but you should still use premium.

also, on cold start ups, the TL intentionally throws fuel on the catalytic converter to help it get warmed up faster.

we've recently been seeing a rash of threads about 02 sensors and cats.
which makes me believe that fuel is important for the o2 sensor and cat.

Jen, I would reset the Check Engine Lights, by taking off the negative terminal to the battery for a few seconds.
if the codes come back in the next week, you def. have a failing sensor or cat.

the sensors are cheaper than the cat.
if the codes come back after you reset them, I would try new 02 sensors.
