'05 TL 6MT transmission issues

113k miles. I'm getting a lot of jerking as I'm driving. It seems to be worst in 3rd gear at about 40 mph/3000 rpm. happens to a lesser degree in higher gears too.

I've always had an issue in 1st where at times, it would just start jerking and I would have to either shift to 2nd or stop and start again. I also had the issue with the difficulty shifting into 3rd, which was fixed a number of years ago.

I'm now living 60+ miles from the nearest Acura dealer. A highly recommended independent mechanic told me it's typical for Hondas but it's getting worse and no way is this right. I have an appointment to take it to a Honda dealer, but would appreciate any input as to whether anyone else has seen this problem.

Thanks.

Clutch slipping? At that mileage i wouldn't be too surprised.

first, the TL's clutch is one of the hardest cars to master.

2nd, does the RPMs climb while speed stays the same?

Justn brings up a good question.
How long have you had the car OP? The clutch in these cars is indeed different than older models because of the CDV.

Also, something to note is that the 3G has "excessive underhood temperatures" as described by Honda, that causes the Motor mounts to wear out prematurely. Specifically the front mount, which can cause some jerking and vibrations.

^its more than the Check valve in the slave cylinder.
we have dual mass flywheel and a self adjusting pressure plate.
its an unconventional clutch system, which takes time to get used to. I still get jerky 1st gear take offs, even with the check valve deleted..

its just a hard car to drive. I have to pay attention to EVERY thing that I'm doing. i wish it were more forgiving.

Sounds like it could be a flywheel issue as well. My friends 350z was doing this, we replaced it with a standard light weight flywheel and threw away the dual mass and it was fixed. But we did also replace the clutch with a different one.

No, RPMs do not climb. It's not a slipping clutch.

I bought it new and have been driving it for 8+ years. It's not an issue of mastering the clutch. I've been driving manuals for 35 years.

How bad is it? Are we talking about a stutter or the car bucking? My '05 has gotten bad this summer when lightly on the gas. Very noticeable in 1st and 2nd trying to drive slowly through the neighborhoods. 1st is pretty much not useable at low speeds without the car jerking/stumbling/bucking a bit. If I drive at 35mph in 4th and set the cruise, it is perfectly smooth. But if I drop off the cruise, I can feel a slight stumble/jerking in the powertrain. I don't drive my car that often these days and my wife kind of chuckled at me the other day since I was having issues keeping it smooth in slow traffic. She thought it was just her that was having issues and now knows it is the car.

Kind of thinking APP sensor, but not sure yet and don't want to spend $130 on it until I can diagnose it a bit more.

I would guess it's the APP sensor. Same problem with mine, changed it and now no problem.
