'04 TL blown tranny :O
Well, my 04 tl now has a blown tranny at 94807 miles. I am now sitting on the side of the road waiting for the tow truck as I type this.
I had an 02 type S and had the tranny replaced twice in less than 100k miles. I thought I would have better luck with the 3rd gen, but I guess not. No more acuras for me.

No idea. Just was driving to work and stopped at red light. Tried to accelerate and the tach would jump up to 7k. The car would move a little so I just drove it to the side if the road. Then I tried putting in D and R. Car did not move in either one.

This stinks bro. The only thing that i am really worried about on the TL is the trans. Everything good on mine at 70K but from what i keep reading about in here i am scared. Hope it wont cost too much to get your fixed. Good luck.

Dealer called this morning and said my car is ready. I got a remanufactured tranny installed, and they also replaced 2 cracked motor mounts. Everything is covered under the 100K powertrain warranty when I got the car certified pre-owned back in 2006. I'll ask what exactly happened to the tranny issue when I pick it up and update here. It better not be the 3rd gear clutch pack issue like the 2nd gens.
Man, I'm just happy it all went out at 94K miles. From what I have been reading, a tranny replacement at the dealer is over $4K!
Just crossing my fingers that this car will make it to 200K miles. Won't be surprised if it doesn't, though.

The next day, I got an even less informative answer from my service advisor. He said that they just get error codes that determine whether they should replace the tranny, or not. He said they do not do breakdowns, so would not be able to tell me what exactly went wrong. They simply send the busted tranny back to Acura and they do all the "analysis" on it.
The new (remanufactured) tranny seems pretty smooth, although the shifting between R-N-D and vice versa is more slushy than the original tranny. It doesn't seem to confidently click into place. Like some other members of this board, there seems to be a delay when shifting between R-N-D. However, the delay seems to be shorter in the new tranny.
2 things I learned from this:
1. I only get the 100K powertrain warranty if I buy the car certified. If I were to buy the car new, it's only the 4 year/50K. I would have been screwed if I bought the car brand new.
2. Even if you do not have Acura roadside assistance, call your service advisor to set you up with the tow. The tow charge is included in the warranty. I am going through some headaches to try and get my tow money back since I paid out-of-pocket, since the ticket for the repair is already closed.

So, as I picked up my car, I asked the guy behind the counter what exactly caused the tranny to fail. He went to check on the error code, and told me that it was a "torque converter clutch" issue. My service advisor was not available at the time, so I called the next day.

All these transmission problems with the early 3rd gen TL's has got me scared......I'm not trying to have to replace a transmission if I can avoid it. I will probably cross 04-05s off my list. I am shocked that Acura hasn't done a better job of acknowledging the issue and making an effort to do right by the owners. Makes me reconsider picking up a TL.....My Mercedes has 385,XXX+ miles on it and both the engine and transmission are original.

^ - What are you talking about? Acura has been very easy to deal with regarding transmission replacement. Dealers need a little more work, but if you hit a wall, a quick call to Acura Corporate usually takes care of the issue.

I run the tranny hard too at times!
Anyone know if there is a known issue with 1st gear? I notice it takes it a second to catch when I push the peddle from a stop. I am thinking this is just normal use though..

Most of the threads I have read made it seem like Acura only replaces the transmission about half the time and they only cover a percentage of the replacement costs. Sounds to me like you work for Acura......

Nope. I had to deal with Acura when my brother's 2G TL tranny went. Dealer didn't want to help because he was out of warranty. Corporate made things pretty easy. I really don't understand how you can interpret a somewhat positive statement as indicating I work for Acura.

Honestly, someone who has lost their transmission should create a group on Facebook to try to assess how many people are affected by the issue. Definitely, there is power in numbers. It has been done with the cracked dashboard issue and there has been a good response. (about 93 supporting members and over 30 affected Acura TL owners) Its a great way to assess the scope of the issue. Id join the group just for support, since I am always worried about my transmission. =) see the FB group on the cracked dash so you can get an idea of what I am talking about.

If the issue is as big as it looks, Acura should do a recall, as it did for 2 gen TL,s.
Peace and GL.
