'04 A/C makes hissing sound, no more cold air
My car has 148K miles on it, and the A/C has been ice cold for the past 10K miles (as long as I've owned it). Yesterday, when I had it on low temp and low fan, I noticed a hissing sound coming from behind the dash, maybe under the hood area. My fear is a leak in the evaporator core, but I'm hoping it's just a leak in a hose or something. I'm a noob at A/C fixes for the most part, but I don't want to get raped at a shop. I have a friend who is a mechanic but he lives an hour away, so I'd like to have a good idea of how to go about figuring out the problem and fixing it before I head over there this weekend.
I know a guy who works at an oil change place, and he could test/refill the system for cheap, but he's now answering my phone calls :'(

You'll need to throw some gauges on the system to see what the pressure might be, some pressure remaining but low, you can use an electronic leak detector or soap/water to find the leak. If there is no pressure in the system, you'll need to add some refrigerant to be able to find the leak. Look closely for any wet spot where the oil/refrigerant might have leaked out and some residue is remaining.
If the pressures are up to specs, need to look for electrical problem.

Actually the A/C seems to be very durable, as in most newer cars, but problems do happen, but no common area that I'm aware of. It may not be a leak so you'll need to test. Quick test, with the car off, hit the schrader valve quickly to see if any pressure, but don't put you face or hands in the area.

The valves are where the gauge set is attached, high & low side, but when the system is off the sides will equalize.
