Raj....the only reason I say careful is because the rj kit seems to use the grille parts as support.....i mean i dont know ur idea so im not gonna assume... but i just threw it out there.

Well I'm thinking of removing the cross bar and getting the floating A. You think that cross bar is there for support?

^ I vote no. There is support on either side of the grill from that tab that bends over the grill... and the bar going through the middle of the grille is not attached to anything else.

As long as you are sure that cross support is not weight bearing/structurally essential because you have the RJ kit and I know it makes up the bottom and side parts of the grille.....But same as OEM I don't see how it could be different? Unless the bumper material is REALLY flimsy. (I will put money on it that the crossbar is useless.) I say DO the floating A. You will be the first with a RJ kit to do it! I photoshopped my car too to get ideas. I love my grille! It just takes some balls. DO IT!

Well since i put it out there... let me ask you guys to make some recommendations now...all you guys.. especially rocky since u actually executed this thing. This is what I was thinking of after removing the cross bar:

Option 1

Do it just like Darksom has with the top and bottom trim pieces in NBP except, however I wanna preserve the silver housing that houses the A emblem and get the A and the housing dark chrome. I think with that housing.. and I have to credit Trew for this, and he's right, it makes the A emblem more flush with the front and not too far back in the grill.

Option 2

Obviously cut cross bar and floating A just like option 1 except now paint top and bottom trim pieces in Dark Chrome

Option 3

Same as Option 1 except paint top trim piece in NBP and bottom piece in Dark Chrome

Just variations of one another basically. I'll post 3 pics of my front end so that it can be photochopped.

hey since you have the RJ kit why not try and do the grill like in that pic with the photochoped grills on a black and SSM TLs? You already got all the RJ stuff, why not finish it with something special. And it would look good

OK just a question, in regards to your options....

Are you looking to do a total custom job or are you going to use the new readymade grille insert? There are advantges/disadvantages to both.

The disadvantage with a custom job is the fit/finish and durability of the job. darksom's came out awesome, he got it done by a bodyshop. I haven't heard from him recently. It's been 2 yrs now so I wonder how his has been holding up. My grille is doing OK but is due for a refurbishing in spring. The advantage with a custom job is that you can make it any way you'd like.

The disadvantage for the readymade one is that the sides seem a bit chunky and you will lose that thin body color trim piece that covers the bottom and sides. I bet the mesh on that grille is not high quality and you might think about upgrading it to something perhaps powdercoated. (I know you got the good stuff for the lower grilles on your RJ from the same place I did! Knowing you, I'll bank that you are going to match it up with the lower grilles!) But the advantage is that the material is solid, should last longer with less maintenance and is easier to install than a custom job.

Daaam... I'm digging all the chops.. you guys are great!! I'm leaning towards the black chrome.. looks a bit more contrasted instead of the all out murdered look on NBP. And yes I am getting it done at a shop so a bit more can be done. I'm also probably going to get my fog grills painted in a different color so that it stands out a little more at the same time... I was thinking Anthracite... wonder how that would look?

Can someone give me a chop of Option 3 with the fog grills in Anthracite?

Thanks guys!

NBP top trim, black chrome badge, black chrome bottom trim.

This looks really nice, but my vote is for all black top and bottom, with the bar removed, leaving only the badge and the center piece.

Rocky, My Man! The issue wit the 'pre-made grille' is going to be fixed.
Tomorrow throughout this weekend I'll be working on my grille-mod as I told you before.
It's going to have a better design than the eBay one [at least in my head it is]. My design that I'm thinking of will let you retain the original V-part of the grille. Hopefully it won't come out chunky at all.

Rocky, I believe you purchased the eBay one... if you haven't yet---maybe you should wait till next week and see how mines go =p but I'm not a vendor or anything... so I can't talk about selling them [I assume].

The opening in the grille provides airflow, which is needed to properly cool the radiator and condensor. You could risk overheating since the airflow will be cut down substantially.

What do you think of the chop above?
