Rear Window Re-tint? Help
Has anyone had their REAR WINDOW tint removed safely and successfully? I am going to have my tints redone at a high-end place because 1) I realize now the extra couple hundo is well worth it and 2) IL laws changed in november making 35% all around legal so i want to be within don't-pull-me-over limits. The place I am going to has me pretty worried, telling me that removing the rear window tint can damage the defrosters and/or radio antenna in the glass. They will do it with a heat gun at the owner's risk. This place has contracts with local Lambo and Bentley dealerships, they dont fck around. I've seen their work, it is amazing. Maybe they are just covering their ass by telling me this? Anyway, love to know if anyone has done this. Perhaps this belongs in "Problems and Fixes" but I think this section gets the most views and I will gladly post some picks when I have this done in a couple or few weeks, regardless of the outcome.
If it matters, Solarguard is the brand I will be having removed. Or maybe it was Sunguard. One of those two for sure.
THANKS ALL!

i had to coordinate this with two friends who will be getting first-time tinting done. we're going 4/1. i'll make sure to do some before/afters.
i currently am rockin 50% all sides, 5% rear. hoping to be (legal) 35% all around, and still have working defrost and radio. otherwise my ass might start paying for XM radio and installing a custom interior rear window hair dryer mod.
for those who care and didnt know, any tints on the front sides used to be illegal here in IL. but the back sides and rear had no restrictions. this is what just changed in nov 2009.

I had it done once......if i rememeber correctly the guy sprayed the soon to be removed rear window tint with brake cleaner (yes break cleaner). He immediately put a film over the rear tint to keep the brake cleaner from dripping away and allow it time to soak in....he gave it like 15 min and he started pulling off the rear tint. There was some small amounts of residual adhesive left over which he removed with a plastic scrubbing sponge like those used to scrub dishes.
Defroster was left intact and new tint was installed....no complaints.
I remember he saying he picked it up from "pro tinters forums"...maybe you could google it.

You aren't wrong. But 5% sure looks a lot dif than 35%. No gun necessary. More importanly tho, I no longer like the look of two dif degrees of tint. I want it consistent. For looks AND legality.

UPDATE:
Talked to a different guy at the shop just now and set up my appt for 4/1. This guy was more knowledgeable made me feel completely comfortable redoing the rear. He said it is only issue with a shop that doesn't take the time to do it right. He assured me it will be no problem at all. I couldn't be happier with this news or the quote. MODS, you can kill this thread if you want. I will do a new thread for before/after tints so people can see the difference in brands, shades and quality of work. THANKS ALL.

i originally went to Ziebart in Arl Hts. The guy there was decent, but certainly not a perfectionist. he did at least do the quarter windows correctly, other than leaving a tiny crease and some dust bubbles in there. but months later when i saw my buddy's car done at autowerks in northbrook, i was blown away. i've heard people say "no tint job is perfect" but i'm not so sure autowerks isn't an exception to that rule. i knew eventually i'd have to get mine redone by this place, then the law change gave me even more of a reason. can't wait for 4/1!
