My new 2004 TL

I’ve been looking for about a year and a half now, and with some help from AZ members I finally own my replacement TL. My original 2005 TL was flooded as described here, but other than this being an 04, with 81,000 miles (mine had ~51,000), it’s the same ABP/Camel 6-Speed Navi.

I’m the second owner, and the previous lived in NC where I picked it up 10 days ago. The records were very good, clean carfax; I had the local Acura do a full inspection for $95. The first morning I started it up here in NJ I heard a loud moaning, especially while turning. After contacting the NC and NJ Acura dealers, I determined my O-Ring had some issues. $0.67 later, problem solved. Thanks guys.

The previous driver updated to Orange Disc 3.8, but as per my recent 3.8 thread here I couldn’t find clear directions/files for patching. Fortunately laziebun was able to dig up the right files with OK-button skip, ‘AD’, Trip Comp etc. While I’d like to have everything but the OK-button so I could display the text from my 3.4 nag screen.

All in all I’m pretty happy with my new TL. There’s a few minor imperfections but I’ve been detailing the car for the last 4-5 days and other than one small rip in the leather and some wear in a couple spots, everything is good. There is gold pin-striping down the sides which I’m not in love with, but don’t know how to cleanly remove.

I plan to do some upgrades here and there, but for now it’s just great to be back in the forums!

Thanks for the welcome back. Yes, it took me about a year and a half to get the replacement, so I almost got a black on black or a different variation but happy I ultimately stuck with my ABP/Camel.

I'm thinking the pinstripe is not paint. It feels a bit raised, and at a couple of the ends where doors meet it looks like a little has worn off, but the paint around it is just fine. I have access to a shrink-wrap heat gun, but the goo-gone won't eat into the paint or show where I've removed the strips? You had this on your dschaos?

Ahh see there I can help you! I do not have the OK-button skip, but I still have my files with hacked nag-screen text, unlocked trip computer, and custom Back.bmp startup graphic. I'm happy to send you exactly what I have (although you probably don't want it to say 'Welcome to Shaun's TL'). Or tell me what you want and I'll show you where to look/what to do.

Edit: And why do some people say ABY - what am I missing?

My old Civic Si came with vinyl pin stripes. I used a heat gun on low to help peel it off. Used Goo Gone to remove the left over adhesive then i washed the car right afterwards, no damage to the paint.

Thanks for all the good words, feels great to be back! I've been making my rounds to friends who've been laughing at me sharing 'Putt-Putt', my girlfriend's '97 auto Civic. My best friend was showing it off more than I was - he works at a gym and kept bumping into co-workers coming to work, saying 'yo, check out my buddy's new ride' like it's his.... Not complaining tho!

And the same buddy used to work at a detailing shop - he said the pinstripes are vinyl, even pulled a little off and saw ABP underneath, so in the next couple weeks it's time to break out the shrink-wrap gun!
  • Still need to find a good place to pick up the stock wing I used to have. (Not lip spoiler).
  • Liked the body side molding I had, but only have driver's side and hoping not to have to pick up a whole new set
  • Tints maybe
  • Fog switch turns on and indicated in dash, but bulbs not coming on... troubleshooting time
  • Might switch out side mirrors for 07-08's
  • Reverse cam?
  • Illuminated front cupholders I've seen here?
  • Hook up aux-in plug - don't need iPod link - but so no more tape adapter
  • And see if there's some way to install my previous JL 12-W7 and MBQuartz speakers I have lying around from my previous '91 Maxima.
Other that that, not sure where I plan to go with the car, I want it nice but don't want rice!

AHHHHHH. Repressed memories!!! Your Avatar looks like the murder scene of my first TL!!!! Get it out of there!

(A recent pic of the same place my car was flooded - at least now I can find humor in it but my new car goes no-where near these spots!)

just saw this...our cars are almost twins! You got a pretty good price too..i got mine at 52k miles for 14k last year.

I would highly recommend getting some tints, primarily to protect the interior but also add a nice look.
