Laying Carbon Fiber isn't so bad

I have been thinking about changing the wood out to CF in my car but I didn't like any of the fake or even real sticker options. So I bought a spare center console on eBay, some CF fabric and some epoxy and got to work. Just finishing up the three console pieces and surprisingly enough its going very well. After a few more layers of epoxy and some wet sanding i'm home free!! I love wet sanding too its so rewarding! Stay tuned for more progress.

Looks good Roger, good luck doing the doors. I don't think those parts come off.

They do come off, actually. However, the silver trim is attached to the faux-wood/faux-cf.

Roger that's turning out great man! I love it. I really need to drop by and check out everything you've done recently. I may shoot you a text tomorrow or the day after and see if I can roll through.

Btw there is a Charlotte meet planned for next month. Check out the Regions section and put your name on the list! You can follow me there if you would like.

Thanks everyone! I will be sure to post up the final pics when im finished. I bought all the supplies here. Also no vacuum pump or bleeders were used

http://www.shopmaninc.com/shortroll.html
-(FG-DC5740) 5.7oz x 40 inch wide , 2x2 Twill Weave Carbon Fiber ($25/yd)

http://www.shopmaninc.com/epoxy.html
-(EPOX-635311) Epoxy with 3:1 Ratio Medium Epoxy Hardener

Total: About 35-40 dollars in materials I think it was near $ 50 shipped and I have quite a bit of CF I could do 4-5 sets of interior parts maybe more

No vacuum or bleeder?
Hmn... so essentially "air-cure"? That came out really well with no vac/bleeder!
Looks like you applied a very nice even coat of epoxy

I referenced several DIYs before and never once saw anyone using any type of vacuum bleeder when wrapping CF pieces. I have see vacuums used to create plastic moulds but when laying CF any air bubbles you have are easily removed wisping a small blow torch over the surface of the epoxy after you coat it on. Also most epoxies have pretty good self leveling properties.

Good job man! How many applications of the epoxy did you do? That stuff lays on thick! That's good though. Good quality resin!

Looks great! Did you use the same epoxy to adhere the fabric onto the part itself?

I can't lie, I really enjoyed it. I'll post what I thought about it in Ramblings if there is a thread for it. I don't want to steer this thread off course by talking about an animated movie

How hard do you think it would be to do the grey parts on the aspec lip kit.

Some have vinyl wrapped it which looks really nice.

Some have custom lips which I have. Really cf but not a 100% perfect fit.

Where are the pics of the finished pieces installed.

I would really like to see what this looks like compared to the real CF kit you can buy.

I know the kit is pricey........ But you know you'll get uniformity with the weave and eveness throughout all pieces. You can call it a "sticker" but it's a REAL CF sticker. What's the difference between that and what you did?

To be honest I haven't finished yet I keep jumping from project to project I just finished a complete LED conversion and now i'm in the middle of my sound deadening project. Maybe after I finally install my Tein SS I can get back to the carbon fiber
